About the Menu

The spa business is constantly growing and changing, and has thankfully been able to flourish despite the economic times. It can be difficult to keep your spa profitable regardless of size however, and in order to remain successful you need to offer clients a menu of treatments and services that will enrich their lives and have them coming back for more.
The type of menu you implement in your spa is going to be based on factors such as personal preference, training background, your financial capital, the space available, and what your market research tells you your area needs. I call this finding the need and filling the niche.

Basic Electricity, Part 1

What Electricity is and Where it Comes From

Electricity is a fundamental force in nature. It is all around us. We are virtually bathing in it at all times in the form of radio and television signals, microwave energy, radar, etcetera. Furthermore, our bodies run on electrical impulses; messages sent from our brains, through the nerves to the muscles causing contractions, both voluntary and involuntary.
Electricity is an electron in motion, and electrons are the negatively charged particles, which orbit the nucleus of an atom. In order to understand electricity, it is best to visualize it in some way. Think of the moon orbiting around the earth. The earth is analogous to the nucleus of an atom, and the moon is analogous to the electron. The whole system of the earth and the moon is then analogous to the simplest atom in nature, the hydrogen atom.

Little Piggy Perfection

For as many as 40 million Americans, unsightly toenails are a fact of life. Caused by fungus that can penetrate the nail and nail bed, thick and discolored toenails can be a serious problem for many athletes, or those just unlucky enough to have been exposed at the gym or nail salon. Onychomycosis (commonly referred to as toenail fungus) may also result in splitting of the nails or lifting of the nail bed and those who suffer from it know that it can be very difficult to treat.

Skin Care Myth: Oily Skin does not Need a Moisturizer

Facts:

Believe it or not, moisturizer is beneficial for oily skin. Sebum provides lubrication to the skin, not moisture. Moisturizers are important because they provide ingredients that can be absorbed into the skin. Sebum, on the other hand, comes out of the pores to lubricate the skin, sealing in the moisture. After you cleanse and tone with products designed to combat oil, your skin may be a little dry. When moisturizer is not used, sebum goes into overproduction; it is making an effort to quickly prevent the loss of the remaining moisture in your skin. This is in addition to the usual overproduction of oil you commonly experience. Moisturizers can reduce the overproduction of oil and minimize an oily appearance. Moisturizers that are oil-free and contain salicylic acid help prevent oil buildup and moisturizers that create a matte absorb and combat oiliness.

Quit the Damage

The sun's rays make us feel good, and in the short-term make us look pretty good. But our love affair is not a two way street. Sun exposure causes most of the wrinkles and age spots on our face and body. We often associate a glowing complexion with good health, but skin color obtained from being in the sun or in a tanning booth accelerates the effects of aging and increase your risk of skin cancer. Those who have been in the sun or tanning salon too often tend to have a lizard- or leather-like skin appearance.

Client Intake Forms. What you need to know and the important questions to ask

A thorough skin analysis and consultation sets the tone for the client relationship and is the key to your success. In order to provide your client with the most appropriate treatment, there are five essential forms that I feel are necessary to create client files. Using these forms will help build your relationship with the patients, establish clear communication, and gather necessary information to develop effective in-clinic and daily skin care regimens that ensure optimal client results.

How do you convert your hair removal clients to skin care clients?

Skin Care Myth: Sunscreens clog up pores.

Facts:

This can only be answered on a case-by-case basis. There are a few factors when determining this statement. First, consider the ingredients used in the formulation. It should be tested and labeled “non-comedogenic,” which means it has been tested on humans and did not cause comedones or breakouts. Non-chemical sunscreens are better for sensitive skin, as chemical sunscreens can be irritating to sensitive skin and work differently than physical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens can be water-resistant and add to the “staying power” of the sunscreen. With that being said, they must be intentionally cleansed from the skin to avoid problems. Sunscreen can clog pores if used improperly or not cleansed thoroughly from the skin after use.

Grapefruit Juice Recipe

While keeping with the theme of being healthy this new year, subtle changes can help spruce up the spa in the eyes of the client. Mix things up and let your clients know you are looking out for their health too! A simple way to do this is to change up a familiar habit of giving your guest water… Instead, why not try to surprise their taste buds with a little grapefruit juice? This juicy fruit contains natural sugars, citric acid, and essential oils like limonene, pinene and citral. It has high amounts of vitamin C, with smaller amounts of vitamin A, B complex, E and K. Try this mixture to energize your afternoon: Combine equal portions of lemon juice and grapefruit juice to produce a stimulating drink that will brighten your day!

All Spots Are Not Created Equal

It is not a secret. Tanning does not do a body good. But truth be told, many of us still envy the look of the beach bronzed sun goddess. Oh, that golden glow. Being an expert in aesthetics, I know spending countless hours worshiping the sun is like asking the sun gods to hurry up and turn you into a prune. While dried-out plums may do wonderful things for your digestive system, it is not a look many of us can pull off. Ultraviolet light causes your skin to go into “fight or flight” mode, producing melanin and creating the tanned look. But as we age, long-term sun exposure leaves behind a trail of unwanted spots.

Laser and IPL Burns: Now What?!

It is 8:30 a.m. and you just turned on the lights to your office when that proverbial phone call rolls in. "I think you have burnt me! I have blisters all over my legs and I could not sleep all night long. I cannot believe you did this to me."
Your stomach sinks and your mind goes into frenzy. You start thinking, "Did I really burn her? Will she have pigmentation changes… scars? Am I going to be sued? What should I do?"
This gut wrenching feeling coupled with all of its uncertainty is guaranteed at some point in the career of a laser professional. After all, if you do enough treatments, eventually someone will experience a complication. It does not mean that you did anything wrong, but what you do now certainly separates a good laser technician from a true professional.

A Red Miracle for Skin Health

Scientists long ago discovered a class of naturally occurring organic pigments called carotenoids that are crucial for human health. Alpha-, beta- and gamma-carotene are the most popular carotenoids which are converted to vitamin A in the human body. Recently one of the carotenoids called astaxanthin has brought increased attention as a "super nutrient" for human body and skin health.
Astaxanthin is a dark red powder which is insoluble in water but soluble in fat and some organic solvents. This carotenoid is found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans and some wild berries.

Product Knowledge and a Strong Foundation

When it comes to providing your craft, there are some similarities and also defined differences – whether you are a massage therapist or a skin care specialist. Those differences are put in place by your state, written most often in your scope of practice. So knowing the regulation of your state is very important.
In some states, massage therapists are not allowed to put product on the face. In addition, skin care specialists have their own limited guidelines for their massage approach; they usually can provide a relaxation technique to feet, hands, neck and décolleté.

Sulfur

The mineral sulfur (S) is found abundantly in nature, the foods we eat, and the human body. Although avoided by some for its pungent smell, sulfur can be skin's best friend by helping heal a variety of conditions. Naturally antiseptic and antibacterial, sulfur is one of nature's most important minerals and one of man's oldest beauty remedies. As far back as Hippocrates' day, people have been using this pungent-smelling, bright yellow mineral to treat the skin for everything from rashes and warts to bedsores. Ancient Romans soaked in sulfuric waters to relieve pain and to stave off the signs of aging.

Vitamin Q

Vitamin Q, also known as ubiquinone, ubidercarenone and coenzyme Q (CoQ10), is an oil-soluble, vitamin substance that is present in eukaryotic cells, mostly located in the mitochondria. This plays a major role in the electron transport chain and participates in aerobic cellular respiration, results in creating energy in the form of ATP. In the human body, energy is created 95 percent of time from this process. Since the heart, liver and kidneys require the highest level of energy, these organs have the highest concentration of CoQ10. The body naturally makes CoQ10 to neutralize free radicals in cells.

A New Concept in Cellulite Etiology and Treatment

For many years cellulite was considered to be a disorder of fatty tissue. It was frequently attributed to anatomical variations in fat distribution between men and women. A host of other causes were suggested, including excessive amount of both intracellular and intercellular fluids and faulty lymphatic drainage. Here are the facts as we know them today. So-called cellulite is a condition seen only in women. It is characterized by a disorder of the connective tissue that retains the adipose tissue in compartments in the subcutaneous portion of the skin, that is, in the layer above the muscles and below the dermis.

Apple Cider Vinegar

From baking soda to salt, there are several items that are considered staples within the typical American kitchen. One such item is apple cider vinegar. Whether it is used to make salad dressing or as a household cleanser this pantry item has played a starring role. However, many do not realize that the organic, unfiltered kind has also enjoyed a long history as the basis of

Ten Questions to Help You Check the Vital Signs of Your Client Relationships – Part 2

When client relationship checkups are not performed regularly, the relationships can take unexpected turns. An example of this can be seen through an experience one of my clients had. This particular client is a Fortune 100 company with a longstanding relationship with IBM. The CEO of IBM at the time, Sam Palmisano, had decided to visit my client's CEO. A week ahead of the visit my client's relationship manager for IBM called his counterpart to discuss the upcoming CEO summit between their companies. Apparently he did not get a return phone call during that week!

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil distilled from the leaves of the melaluca plant which is native to Australia. This oil has a triple antiseptic effect by its ability to fight bacteria, fungi and some viruses. Speaking about bacteria, it also reduces the production of sebum in the sebaceous glands which reduces the production of the bacteria known to cause blemishes. It is believed that when used in conjunction with glycolic acid, tea tree oil can help destroy the bacteria that can cause acne flare-ups. Tea tree oil is a great moisturizer and cleanser because it opens clogged pores and removes the bacteria from the skin surface.

Product Labeling

"Labeling compliance is more important than ever. The FDA takes it very seriously and can prevent products from ever coming to market because of a misleading statement, health claim, incorrect drug or nutrition facts panel, or wrongly named ingredient," said Benjamin England, founder and CEO of FDAImports.com.
Recently, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consulting firm, FDAImports.com, has launched five new labeling websites that allow companies with products that are regulated by the FDA to receive a label review in order to identify any compliance issues with their product label.

Healthy Skin 360°: 5 Step Cycle to Vibrant, Radiant Skin

How do we achieve healthy skin? Is it just using the right skin care products? Or is it using a sunscreen with a SPF of 30+ every day? It is not quite that easy.
Healthy skin begins with a healthy stratum corneum, the outer most layer of skin that serves as a barrier against desiccation and environmental stressors. The stratum corneum (SC) was once thought to be a layer of biologically inert dead skin cells. However, advancements have demonstrated that it is a biochemically and metabolically active structure. The SC is composed of a discontinuous layer of terminally differentiated keratinocytes, or corneocytes, surrounded by a matrix of lipids.

December 2012

Welcome to the month of December! For adults and children worldwide this is probably the most anticipated month of the year. In fact, preparations for this month seem to begin earlier and earlier every year. Just recently, I made a quick stop at my local grocery store to pick up a few items and as soon as I entered the store my ears were bombarded by the sounds of loudly playing holiday music. Now, I'll be honest. I love listening to Christmas music as much as the next person, but it struck me that the store was already celebrating this holiday and had completely skipped over Thanksgiving!

November 2012

While analyzing a client's skin, you discover they have a severe skin condition ... how do you break the news?"

Skin Concerns of Diabetics in the Spa

With the healthy growth of aesthetic services, all sorts of clients walk into the spa. Clients with medical conditions, who previously did not consider spa treatments now make spa visits a routine part of their lifestyle. As responsible professionals, we need to be aware of the types of clients that visit our facility and learn how our services may affect their well-being. In particular, we need to be prepared to best serve our diabetic clients. There are approximately 25 million diabetics (about one in 10 people) in the U.S. and the number is increasing. It is likely that your clients already include people with diabetes.

Building Relationships Through a Consultative Process

All your life, your skin has been making a first impression for you. It can reveal whether you are hot or cold, tired or rested, sick or healthy. Your skin provides protection from potentially lethal bacteria and viruses, and shields you from the sun's ultraviolet rays. To some extent, your genes determine how well your skin stands the test of time. As the population ages, more and more people approaching middle-age will be diagnosed with skin disorders, some that will be life-threatening.

We Live in a Digital World

We live in a digital world, spinning to the tune of electronic notices at every step. From the moment we wake to the moment we slumber, digital tunes hum songs of futurism in our ears. The songs are both quiet and loud, and they motivate our momentum. The digital world inspires impetus and the continually fluctuating concept of business: past the beginnings of bartering, past shipping trade, past trains and planes traversing the globe, and onward into the future of electronic commerce. Software and technology are used to help streamline efficiency and customer satisfaction in a world where information is one click away, and everything has become a digital representation of its former self.

To Tone or Not to Tone

Throughout history, the ways in which a society feels about the pursuit of healthy, beautiful skin is a direct reflection of their culture and climate. Many varied uses of skin care products have been documented throughout history – from the Egyptians through the modern day U.S. The cultural reasons for the uses of different types of products are fascinating and the use of products as "toners" has a long history. Although multi-step skin care regimens were not truly marketed until the 1960s, the use of a cleanse, tone and moisturize routine became common around the 1930s in the U.S.

Fall’s Skin Care Rules

If you are still using the same skin care products leftover from summer, it is time to revamp your routine. It is critical to change things up when the weather cools down. Drier fall air brings about a host of potential skin issues, but it is possible to look beautiful – and defy your age all season long. Here are my three tips for moving your routine from summer to fall:

Women Prefer Unnatural Tan

Many women today want to look fresh faced and natural, which is often equated with being young.  However, a new survey found that some women, especially young women, still favor the unnatural – and unhealthy – look of a tan.

SURVEY STATISTICS:
The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) conducted an online survey of adults nationwide which found:

  • Nearly three-fifths (58 percent) of respondents 18 to 29 years old thought people looked more attractive with a tan.
  • Nearly three-fourths (71.3 percent) of respondents 18 to 29 years old agreed with the statement "Sun exposure is good for your health."
  • In the past year, approximately 40 percent of respondents under age 30 tried to get a tan (used a tanning bed, spent time in the sun, used a self-tanner or got a spray tan).
  • One-fourth (25.2 percent) of respondents 18 to 29 years old were unsure if sun exposure can cause wrinkles.

Holiday Party Beauty to Look Great All Night

For fabulous lips, first apply lip liner and fill in your lips with the liner, apply lipstick, blot, reapply lipstick, and then gloss. Reapply gloss throughout the night as needed.

To keep eye makeup from ending up under your eyes: first, apply foundation or cover up to lids, apply a translucent powder to soak up excess oil, and then apply eye makeup; second, instead of black mascara, curl lashes and apply clear mascara; and finally, to make a bolder statement, glue on a row of fake lashes and skip the mascara and eyeliner altogether!

Ten Questions to Help You Check the Vital Signs of Your Client Relationships – Part 1

Many of us use annual checkups to keep tabs on our physical health each year. I believe annual checkups are vital and very important to your professional health as well. Here is part one of a two-part series on the ten questions that should be asked to check the health of your client relationships.

Most doctors firmly believe that certain types of regular screening tests and checkups are essential and help save lives. And most of us, no matter how much we despise devoting an hour or more to getting poked and prodded, dutifully go for an annual checkup each year.

Beauty Benefits of Omega-3s

It is a well-known fact that omega-3 fatty acids help improve our metabolism, immune system and brain performance. However, what is a less known fact is that omega-3s actually provide a plethora of beauty benefits by moisturizing from the inside. For this reason, it is imperative that adults make sure they are getting their omega-3s because they are a definite health and beauty priority.

Especially when considering our hair, skin and nails!

November 2012

A kaleidoscope of sun-kissed golden hues of gold and orange paint the sky and nature; pumpkins, scarecrows and dried cornstalks decorate front yards and porches; cheers of team spirit and camaraderie herald through crisp fall air at football games; cool, windy breezes and the billowing of smoke from chimneys; warm cups of cocoa or tea being grasped while snuggling under a soft blanket; the sweet smells of cinnamon, orange and cloves; and the sound of children laughing as they run and jump in piles of freshly raked leaves. All of these things and so much more remind me of the season we are in.

Attracting and Serving Older Clients

Old is a relative term with a definition open to interpretation. People view the meaning of “old” differently, and it is usually used as a generalization. To children, the term typically falls under a different spectrum in their mindset. To a child, old typically defines anything that is older than them, meaning essentially everything. However, once childhood recedes to youth, and youth recedes to young adulthood, the concept of “old” begins to take on a new definition. Eventually the idea of “old” becomes inevitability… becoming old is the process of time, and because time is a natural progression of what currently is, there will always be older generations.

Mitochondria

Skin ailments and concerns can be best addressed when underlying cellular functions and processes are understood. Cellular metabolism at the mitochondrial level can tell us much about how skin changes throughout time and when exposed to different conditions, as well as what is affecting our skin and its appearance. Currently, the skin care industry is engaged in research to determine the best ways to harness mitochondrial functions for use in the fight against premature aging and skin cancer, among other concerns.

Starting a New Skin Care Practice: A Guide for Getting It Right!

Whether you intend to work for a spa or salon, or to begin a solo practice, the future successful aesthetician will need a good career plan and much dedication in order to grow a solid business. Beauty schools are still lacking in teaching the fundamentals of career development, and many prefer to avoid addressing the often unpleasant realities of establishing a new practice for fear of losing paying students. The ranks of newly licensed aestheticians are regularly thinned by the challenges and disappointment discovered in the first year or two of skin care practice, with small initial income and harder-than-expected work leading the list of reasons for dropping out.The good news is that aesthetics is not such a difficult career to prosper in if you know what to expect in the beginning and then follow through with some well-planned strategies. This column is dedicated to helping new (and some already-established) skin care professionals shorten the path from starting out to waiting list in a skin care practice.

Exercise and Your Health

According to Gretchen Reynolds, author of The First 20 Minutes: Surprising Science Reveals How We Can: Exercise Better, Train Smarter, Live Longer, current scientific evidence suggests that exercise not only helps you live longer but it also keeps you vibrant for the length of it. All the way down to your DNA! Exercise and simply staying active can lengthen your telomeres and keep your mitochondria healthy. In fact, it is suggested that a majority of the physical signs we once thought were caused by aging are actually the result of being inactive.

Did you know?

  • The cartilage discs within our bodies are squeezed together like sponges due to the force of gravity when we stand or sit. As a result, most everyone grows by 8mm while they sleep. However, the next day the body shrinks back to its former height.
  • Dry patches can mean oily skin. The idea that "dry" can mean "oily" is a foreign concept to many. However, to skin care professionals it is a common fact that is not wildly known.

Obesity and Thyroid Cancer

According to a new study published in the Archives of Surgery, obese patients are more likely than normal-weight patients to have advanced, aggressive forms of papillary thyroid cancer. Within this study, researchers found that high body-mass index (BMI) was associated with more advanced cancer at the time of diagnosis. Obese and morbidly obese patients were more likely to have stage three or stage four cancer, and more likely to have the aggressive forms of the disease. In fact, obese and morbidly obese patients were significantly more likely than thinner patients to have stage three or four disease at diagnosis.

Tips to Vibrant Skin

One of the simplest and most effective ways to have vibrantly beautiful skin is by watching how and what you eat. Here is a great tip to keep in mind when considering ways to adjust your diet and begin a healthier lifestyle.

Eating Right Tip: There is a reason certain foods have a long-lasting shelf life. In fact, the main reason manufactured foods can last for an extended amount of time is a result of the way there are processed and stored.

Therefore, many nutritionists are encouraging their clients to partake in a “real foods diet.”

Burdock (Arctium lappa)

Burdock is another famous weed. It can be combined with dandelion tea to create a powerful cleansing and healing tonic to help purify the blood and balance oily skin, acne and rosacea. Native to Europe and Northern Asia, it is now common in the U.S. as well. It has detoxifying antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory properties, and has traditionally been used as a topical remedy for eczema, acne and psoriasis. Burdock roots contain polysaccharides, volatile oils, and minerals – including calcium and phosphorus – as well as vitamins like thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and ascorbic acid.
