Cool, Calm, & Collected: Skin Cooling Instruments

HISTORY OF SKIN COOLING

For centuries, skin has been cooled in order to reduce pain and improve recovery. Napoleon Bonaparte’s surgeon, Baron Dominique Larrey, used ice to manage soldiers’ pain from amputations and operations. Hippocrates used snow to control edema. In 1892, cooled air was commercialized for the first time by John Dewar. Cooling skin is beneficial for reducing pain because it slows sensory nerve conduction velocity, which increases a person’s pain threshold, and improving recovery because it can cause blood vessels to constrict, which may minimize bleeding and post-procedure bruising and swelling.
