Make no mistake, there will always be a place for elaborate routines for those who desire them, but most consumers are left feeling confused by extensive, multi-step regimens.

The skin care industry is ever changing and growing by leaps and bounds. It took a huge hit during the pandemic, but it is back now. The last season of tradeshows proves that excitement and motivation. Increased demand for education, increased retail options, and increased attendance are a sign that most professionals are happily moving on from the last two years of uncertainty. However, with much sadness, they have lost some of their more seasoned and experienced professionals who retired, had to close their shops, or had to go into different fields,. Who will take their place and take the industry to the next level?

The future of the skin care industry are aesthetic students. Everyone remembers their mentors, heroes, and people who helped, encouraged, coached, and motivated them to do and be better professionals. It is time to return the favor, and it is now professionals’ turn to give back. Starting Solo: Gearing Up for Growth

Written by   Sonita Michelle Gray

Operating a solo practice takes hard work, dedication, and consistency. Before expanding, there are several factors professionals should consider to see their vision through. One of the first signs to expand a business is lack of space. Most solo skin care professionals start their careers working in day spas, medical spas, and dermatologist offices. The more their business flourishes, the more space and team members of like-minded professionals they need to service their growing client base. Usually, the demand for different services and accommodations rises.

Professionals love referrals, but adequate space is needed to accommodate a client base. For example, an expansion may include a beauty bar, VIP lounge, retail boutique area, additional treatment rooms, a storage room, and a break area for employees. Professionals may go from a 200-square-foot studio to a 1,900-square-foot unit. This allows space for all accommodations, including potential events and continuing education classes. The following key aspects will tell professionals if, when, and how they can expand smoothly into a new location and venture.

Raising Retail: Tapping Into Temporary Metallic Tattoos

There is only so much the experts in the beauty industry can do to compete with the rise in at-home DIY treatments. Everything from bleach hair kits to skin care is marketed towards the simplicity of doing it on one’s own. The results? They range from minimal effects to severely adverse skin and hair reactions to total disasters. Yet, people eat it up. They are amused by viral videos of people cutting their own bangs only to watch as their hair springs up with the surprise force of a jack-in-the-box. There are also women who concoct an at-home face mask made of natural ingredients that ultimately causes breakouts and adverse skin reactions. As a result, skin care experts are up against a lot. So, what can professionals do about safely satisfying a DIY nation’s cravings?

Safe Space

The beauty industry has been dominated with services targeting women for decades, but the cultural acceptance of gender fluidity means skin care professionals have an enormous, new opportunity. Offering services and products curated for men as well as those who identify as nonbinary gives professionals the ability to build a stronger client base. To understand this shift, it is vital takes a deeper dive into hormone activity, common hormone-related issues that affects skin, and professional and at-home treatment options. In addition, becoming educated on client transitioning and how to address those skin concerns, as well as modifying one’s mindset to revising the service menu to attract a wider and more diverse clientele will be beneficial.

Change of Life

Professionals may have wondered about the effects menopause has on skin. They have all worked with clients who have relatively good skin and seem to be aging graciously, then suddenly skin begins to exhibit increased dryness, loss of tone, breakouts, and other conditions in a seemingly short amount of time. A Man’s World

More and more men are regularly treating their skin both at home and in spas. For many professionals, male clients may be some of their most loyal clients. But when looking at the reality of the state of cisgendered men’s skin care, it is by no means as normalized in the mainstream markets as experts have long been predicting. Why is this the case? Why is it rare for cisgendered men to place value in properly caring for their skin with consistent morning and night skin care routines?

Saving Skin

Skin cancer is a growing problem internationally. The incidence of melanoma has increased by 4% to 6% annually in fair-skinned populations in North America, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.1 One in 50 Americans develop skin cancer, and melanoma skin cancer kills one American every hour – that is almost 10,000 people per year.2 During the last 30 years, the incidence of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) has been rising 3% to 10% per year whereas the basal cell carcinoma (BCC) incidence rate has risen between 20% and 80% in the United States.3

Aestheticians, massage therapists, hairdressers, and beauticians regularly observe skin of clients, and therefore, any skin therapist plays an important part in the diagnosis and referral of skin cancers. Aestheticians professionals see clients, especially women, more often than dermatologists or family physicians, which means that they play an important role in early skin cancer detection, thereby saving some lives.4

Any cancer is an overgrowth of cells, and skin cancer is no different. Cellular abnormalities are caused in skin’s outer layer, the epidermis, by ultraviolet rays that trigger genetic mutations and cause basal, squamous, and melanoma skin cancers in skin.
