Having a clear understanding of the fundamentals of aesthetics is the foundation of everything skin care professionals do in the spa, as well as what they prescribe to clients. Mastering what is done in the treatment room and why are two key components to the success of any aesthetician. Often, the basics of what is learned are overlooked due to the advancement in the industry. This webinar will bring professionals back to the value they have to clients beyond providing a facial.

Back To the Future: Traditional Chinese Medicine Aesthetics

While Western medicine schools studied cadavers, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) studied and documented patterns of the human, living body for thousands of years. Because of this, Eastern medicine was able to establish patterns that continued in the human body in its natural state.

Western medicine continues their dissection methods in an attempt at controlling symptoms, also known as allopathic medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the manifestation of symptoms, whether in the body or on skin as a warning or a sign that something is wrong and unbalanced. The goal of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to always find balance and create harmony within the body, so it can restore its optimal function. This philosophy is what holism was truly built on. It gets to the bottom of the symptoms – the reason the body responded in a particular manner.

Finding Authenticity: The Truth of Cruelty-Free Beauty

For decades, the beauty and skin care industries relied on animal testing to ensure the safety of their products. Many top brands, including renowned professional skin care brands, have moved towards cruelty-free policies in recent years. Unfortunately, the practice of animal testing still occurs in the industry today despite the increasing demand for products that are not tested at the expense of animal safety.

The reason some brands still test their products on animals despite a consumer shift towards more ethical methods is because of product testing regulations in the Republic of China. Although the law was updated to exclude many general cosmetics, beauty brands that want their products cleared under Chinese local law still require companies to test their products on animals. In light of this, even if a product label specifies that it is cruelty-free or not tested on animals, these assertions may not be entirely true.

Sustainably Harvested: Seaweed in Skin Care

The benefits of seaweed are the subject of serious research and is one of the top subjects in international communities for development. In fact, the global seaweed market size was $13.33 billion dollars in 2019 and is projected to reach 23.04 billion in 2027.

Leading scientists are looking towards seaweed and aquaculture to find numerous applications in the modern world because of its composition and ability to grow just about anywhere in the ocean.

“Seaweeds are abundant and ancient autotrophic organisms that can be found in virtually all near-shore aquatic ecosystems. They form an important living resource of the near shore environment. For millennia, people have collected seaweeds for food, fodder for animals, and fertilizers and soil enhancers. More recently, seaweeds have become important sources of various bioreactive molecules and are important in medicine and biotechnology. Containing phycocolloids, or polysaccharides, they are also used in toothpaste, soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, skin care, milk, ice cream and many other items.”2
