Get in the Mindset: Achieving Success through a Positive Outlook

Written by   Tazeem Jamal, PMDT, LE, spa business coach and international speaker

A mindset that is fixed, rather than set on growth, can sabotage success. The mind is a really powerful thing. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” People with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities, intelligence, and talents determine who they are and they are not able to change their situation. On the other hand, someone with a growth mindset, as the name suggests, believes they can shift and grow and they are not afraid to step into the unknown. They learn and may flounder or fall, but this is what allows them to remain flexible and to grow. Amindset that is fixed, rather than set on growth, can sabotage success. Skin care professionals work in an amazing industry, but it is highly competitive, so being successful and staying on top of one’s game is critical. The learning curve in the industry is always rising. New developments, technologies and, of course, competitors are always nipping at one’s heels. Let this be motivation, not misfortune.

Professionals have to take ownership over their success. Something many aestheticians say is “I am not a salesperson.” Many are not salespeople by nature, but if they shift their perspective and see selling as sharing their knowledge and fulfilling a need for a client, they will feel better about sharing and recommending and it will be received that way. Yes, the possibility of rejection can be crushing and that horrible feeling sets in. However, it is about the client, not the professional.

If a client declines a recommendation, in the words of the singer Ariana Grande, “Thank you, next!” How does this relate? Frame it like a conversation: “Thank you for your time, Mrs. Smith. I will make a note in your file for your next appointment and we can revisit the recommendation at that time.” A “no” does not mean no forever, it just means not today.

Here are some things to do daily to help stay on track:

  • Be courageous rather than letting the emotion of fear impede progress.
  • Believe in success. Attitude is everything. Without belief, success cannot be created.
  • Choose the company of good people – those that can cheer, support, and push you out of your comfort zone.
  • Decide which goals to set and stay motivated by them.
  • Create a vision board. They are a great physical reminder and a great way to stay on track.
  • Take on any challenge with drive, passion, and focus. Break it down into manageable tasks, celebrate the wins, and use them to keep driving forward. Know that when taking calculated risks, there will be setbacks, but if professionals keep their eye on the prize, they will not take themselves out of the game.
  • Be grateful for every single experience, good and bad. This will create resilience. Offering gratitude for the small things brings the capacity to attract and receive more.

When a professional decides to do something, they should set their mind to it. Create a habit around it and then just do it. Think of the number of people around the globe that have had massive amounts of success – everyone from Oprah to Richard Branson; their journey was likely similar. No doubt they have had great success, but they all started not knowing and had to learn, struggle, and push themselves out of their comfort zones. Stay determined to have a wealthy mindset. Remember, success ebbs and flows.

Here is an acronym that will help in maintaining a wealthy mindset and staying focused on goals:

  • Write down goals
  • Envision the future
  • Affirm personal power and desires
  • Listen to that inner voice
  • Take action and transform
  • Hold the vision
  • You and only you can do this
