Each of us has the potential to become more as a skin health professional than our license could ever reflect. As clinicians, we have the unique opportunity to change the way a person thinks about themselves — to help improve their self-image and self-esteem. Whether specializing in relaxing facials, makeup application, hair removal services or chemical peels, we all have the ability to make someone feel better about themself. Networking has changed a lot in the past decade. When I opened my first medical spa in 2003, the majority of communication with my customers was accomplished via newspaper advertisements, flyers, direct mailers and telephone calls. While I still use those methods today, there are other elements of modern networking that cannot be ignored if you want to have a thriving aesthetic practice. The Internet – and in particular social media – has led to a consumer culture where customers are "plugged in" and engaged in real time. But, with that said, you do not want to lose the personal touch that clients have long valued as a part of the spa/salon experience. Read More

I find that when a spa product fails to sell, it is not because it is not desirable but because it needs a little more company support than it is getting. Once, when I was teaching a sales class to a spa team, I asked them to identify the biggest "turkey" among their retail products. Almost everyone pointed to a honey body scrub with almond meal and scent. The poor product had been banished to a dusty bottom display shelf and forgotten there. So we packed up the 18 remaining scrubs in a shipping box, sealed it up and pretended to send it back to the manufacturer. Gone! Rid of 'em! Read More

Creating a new appreciation for aromatherapy in your spa… and in your life! When asked which of our five senses is most precious to us, most of us will say our eyesight — how lost we would be without our eyes! Second in the hierarchy, most of us say we would be devastated to lose our sense of hearing; imagine never listening to Chopin (or Blue Oyster Cult) again. Few of us would identify our sense of smell as our top pick of the five senses. Yet it is our enigmatic and long-misunderstood olfactory capacity which may contain the deepest essence of our mood, behavior and personality — and the mysteries of human love and sex. Read More

Every business comes with its challenges. Owning a spa or salon is no different. Your selection of staff, policies and services offered all impact your clientele and reputation. However, there are important decisions that affect all of these and more. The products you choose to use in the treatment room and offer for retail purchase will shape your business, as well as influence your bottom line. University of Colorado Cancer Center recently published a study on parent's growing concerns and their children. Even though parents are concerned about their child getting skin cancer, the worry does not keep their children indoors. In fact, it is the opposite! The CU Cancer Center tried to understand parents' concerns on this subject. Such questions were asked over the phone: "How serious do you think melanoma is?" and "How easy or hard is it for doctors to treat a typical case of melanoma?" Parents were also asked how many hours per day their children spend outside and physical examinations determined kids' body mass indices (BMIs). Read More

Facts: This is a tricky one to answer, but generally speaking, this is a myth. While it might seem like a good idea to “drain” pus from a lesion for speedy healing, one should consider the typical method used for pustule extraction. The at-home technique usually involves some sort of picking or squeezing action that ... Read More

A busy aesthetics appointment schedule is a truly wonderful achievement. And, a newer but steadily growing practice is just as admirable, especially in a still stagnant economy. Though your sales are growing, your costs related to service work are increasing as well. You may not be comfortable enough to raise your prices during such a sensitive time and simply adding more appointment hours is not so appealing, either. Even if you are happy with your present business income you still do not want to throw away money you could keep. This may be an ideal time to examine your daily career practices to see if you are unnecessarily spending or giving away income. Read More
