When I was younger i had something removed from my face, and it has left a scar. I was told to treat it with rosehip oil, however I was young to think I knew everything and didn't think I needed it, and was really bad at applying. Now I have a scar left from stitches and I am wondering if there is something I can still use now, even though its 8 years later from when I had the surgery, that will make the discolouration go away. Thanks
Hello Caitlin,
Thank you for reaching out! The good news is our industry is always evolving and there are several different professional options to help reduce scarring and discoloration. Without seeing the scar or knowing your skin type and personal regimen it is difficult to give you an exact answer.
There are topical at home options as well as professional treatments that can greatly reduce scarring. I find a combination of both is ideal with your esthetician being able to see and treat your skin while making sure you are on a regimen that will get you the results you are looking for.
Common ingredients you will find for hyperpigmentation include arbutin, licorice root, mulberry, hexylresorcinol, azelaic acid, as well as several different peptides. If you are treating discoloration in addition to texture there are professional treatments options like chemical peels, microneedling, laser etc. Wearing SPF every day will help in any further discoloration and will be a key step when you are treating the scar.
Warmly,

I completely understand your frustration about facial scarring from stitches. I had a similar experience after a childhood accident that required facial sutures. Like you, I didn't take proper care of the wound initially and regretted it later. While established scars are harder to treat, there are still options available. I found that consistent use of silicone gel sheets and vitamin E oil helped fade mine over time, though it took patience. Dermatologists can also offer treatments like microneedling or laser therapy for older scars. Don't lose hope - improvement is still possible even years later. I had a similar experience with a small childhood injury that I didn’t treat properly at the time. Eight years is a while, but I've heard good things about silicone scar sheets, maybe give those a shot? On a completely different note, sometimes when I’m feeling down about stuff like that, I play Eggy Car. There's something hilariously satisfying about trying not to drop the egg, even when I fail spectacularly, it's a good way to lighten my mood and laugh at the absurdity of it all!
