On some of my clients, extractions are simple and easy. But on others not so much. What is the best products or ingredients to use as a softening gel prior to extractions?
Hello Samantha,
The current condition of your client's skin will play a huge part in the ease of extractions. For example if your client has dehydrated skin or a compromised barrier you may find extractions are more difficult. It's important to recognize this and avoid forcing the extraction which can lead to broken capillaries, bruising, or even scarring.
Preparing the skin for extractions is going to play an important part in providing that deep clean without damaging the skin. Cleansing and exfoliating the skin is crucial in prepping the skin. To take it a step further some product lines have disincrustation solutions (aka scaling fluid) for you to apply after cleansing and before extractions that will work to soften the sebum in the pores leading to easier extractions. A common ingredient in these formulations is sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).
There is a common misconception that steam "opens" the pores, but in reality the steam is softening the contents of the pores allowing for easier extractions.
Last but not least, never underestimate the power of facial massage! Manipulating the skin during cleansing and exfoliation encourage the skin to soften.
Warmly,
Rebecca
Hi Samantha,
Thank you for your question! To echo the previous answer, the product or ingredient chosen to assist with extractions depends on your client's skin type, and the type of extractions you are doing. As a general rule though, alkalinity is key in helping to soften extractions and make them easier to perform and desincrustantion products are frequently used to make extractions easier. The most common alkaline ingredient used to assist with extractions is baking soda and it is often combined with some form of salt that works to soften the proteins of the skin further. Additionally, many desincrustants have supportive ingredients such as chamomile, aloe, or echinacea that can help to offset the irritation and inflammation that can occur with tough extractions.
Adding steam can also increase the softening effect, as the heat from the steaming machine helps the pores to "relax" as well as softens any debris within the follicle. Many desincrustation products can also be used with galvanic current, which increases the desincrustation effect, softening the sebum and keratin protein in the follicle further. You'll want to make sure you refer to the product manufacturer's recommendations to ensure the product is designed to be used with a galvanic machine before doing so.
I hope this information was helpful -- Happy extracting!

I’ve run into the same thing with my clients — some extractions are a breeze, others take a bit more prep. I’ve had great results using a gel with salicylic acid and enzymes like papain or bromelain to help soften the debris in the pores. Products that include aloe or allantoin are also great since they help calm the skin while prepping it. I usually steam for a few minutes after applying to really open things up. Would love to hear what others are using too! google baseball
I've noticed the same thing with my clients: some extractions are simple, while others require a bit more preparation. I've had wonderful success using a gel containing salicylic acid and enzymes such as papain or bromelain to help soften the dirt in the pores. Aloe and allantoin-containing products are also beneficial because they assist to relax the skin while preparing it.
Wow, now this is a neat trick! I always wondered about streamlining this process. Extracting insights doesn't always have to be headache-inducing. A faster method for data extraction, eh? It surely saves much time. I appreciate the simplicity being highlighted here. Thinking back, I once spent hours wrestling with some unruly data for a project, wishing there was a faster way. Just then, my friend suggested a Friday Night Funkin themed coding session to relax, and afterward, with a clearer head, I found a much better method.
