My grandmother used to always say that if you hold onto things long enough, they will always come back in style. Seems an odd statement for our industry, but I am here to tell you how applicable it is.
This month’s issue is the client issue, packed with articles about client care, retention, inclusivity, and debunking myths. For many new professionals, and maybe even some “old schoolers,” these topics have piqued your interest. They are the foundation of professional success – they always have been, and they have never changed.
So, back to my grandmother’s wise words. What are we holding on to? Basic, foundational facts, attention to detail, listening to clients, and thorough consultations that include lifestyle habits (and life in general). Ensuring that you rebook clients before they leave, following up with an actual phone call or written message, offering a referral program, understanding that “word of mouth” is still both your best means of building a business as well as your worst. A great service renders sharing with a few people. A bad service renders telling everyone and anyone and that now includes social media platforms.
Let me go on! How about a handshake and eye contact? How about avoiding personal conversation about yourself, your thoughts, your feelings, or that you are “soooo tired.” How about showing off your professionalism, your knowledge, your confidence, and your skill rather than the hottest TikTok trend? It is all old school, back to basics, and simply hanging on to what my grandmother told me.
