As a professional aesthetician, I’ve often been reminded of the deep connection between inner well-being and outer beauty, and while skin care has always been my passion, my journey in this industry has been uniquely shaped by my personal experiences with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The hurdles I have faced have given me a more empathetic and nuanced perspective on client care.

LESSONS LEARNED

When I was diagnosed with PCOS, I was unprepared for the emotional and physical toll it would take on my body and confidence. Dealing with persistent breakouts, excessive hair growth, and unpredictable weight fluctuations made me feel like I was fighting an uphill battle, especially as someone working in an industry focused on beauty and skin health. These challenges often left me feeling self-conscious and uncertain about my place in the skin care world, although it was the very reason that brought me to become an aesthetician.

This difficult journey has taught me resilience, patience, and most importantly, the importance of empathy. I now understand how clients with skin conditions feel when they look in the mirror or enter the treatment room: anxious and vulnerable. My own experiences fueled my determination to not just treat the skin but to help people feel seen, heard, and understood.

Having PCOS has also given me a deeper knowledge of hormonal skin conditions, and I actively seek out the best treatments for clients dealing with similar concerns. My goal is always to help my clients find not just relief, but a sense of empowerment through skin care. Skin care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and solutions require patience and an individualized approach. Taking the time to understand each client’s unique concerns, lifestyle, and emotional state is vital as these struggles can be deeply personal.

CREATING CONFIDENCE

There are a few key strategies that help me maintain my confidence both personally and professionally. Here are some of the tips that have made a difference:

  1. Understand that skin health is influenced by diet, hormones, and stress. Combining topical treatments with lifestyle changes, such as balanced nutrition and stress management, can improve not only skin but also your overall well-being.
  1. Skin professionals spend so much time caring for others that it’s easy to forget about ourselves. Taking the time for regular self-care, whether through relaxing facials or even just moments of mindfulness, is essential to confidence and mental health.
  1. Seek out training and education on skin conditions, especially those related to hormonal imbalances, to strengthen skills and confidence. Understanding my own condition on a scientific level made me a more effective and knowledgeable professional.
  2. It is okay to not have the answer to everything. Skin professionals aren’t really supposed to. When I have a client come in who is showing signs of hormonal imbalance, my first step is to educate them on the body and skin connection and advise they see a doctor; we cannot diagnose clients, but we can point them in the right direction of providers who can!

MANAGING THE CONDITION

PCOS is best managed by addressing the root causes and balancing hormones through a combination of lifestyle changes, skin care treatments, and supportive products. Customized client care to reduce acne and inflammation, and the use of gentle, noncomedogenic products will maintain skin health without clogging pores. Since acne from PCOS is often linked to what goes on internally, incorporating nutritional guidance from a licensed dietitian can help regulate hormonal imbalances, leading to healthier skin and overall reduced symptoms.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

Community is vital, and building a support network is invaluable. Open conversations about personal struggles – whether it’s polycystic ovary syndrome, acne, or another skin concern – foster a sense of unity and understanding in our profession. It also sheds light that skin is rarely ever perfect and that is okay. Being vulnerable not only helps you grow but also encourages clients to share their own experiences. This kind of mutual support can enrich both your personal life and your work.

My journey with PCOS has shaped me into a more empathetic and insightful aesthetician. By embracing the challenges I’ve faced, I’ve been able to offer a unique perspective to my clients, helping them feel understood and empowered in their own skin. I hope my story inspires others in our industry to embrace personal journeys, share knowledge, and continue fostering supportive, open conversations within the community.
