Take Your Time   

Of the many aspects of the skin care business, the topic of this month’s issue is by far one of my favorites. Although I will never argue the true gift of a skin care professional’s touch and hands, I am a huge advocate of the uniqueness and efficacy that various types of equipment can provide.

Equipment in skin care is nothing new. Galvanic current was originally used as early as the 1930s to maximize skin penetration and skin health. Soon to follow was high frequency as well as LED and microcurrent the latter two having been in use since the late 1990s.

Today, the equipment options are limitless, including laser, intense pulsed light, radio frequency, ultrasound, microneedling, hydrodermabrasion, and a host of advanced technologies. Although the options may seem infinite, there are three things that a professional must consider when deciding on the addition of a piece of equipment for their treatment room.

First, know the scope of practice in your state. Just because you can purchase a radio frequency machine does not mean that you can use it as an aesthetician. In many states, an aesthetician is required to be under a physician to use many types of equipment. Know these rules to remain in your scope of practice. Second, know your equipment. Purchase from a reliable distributor that provides training and support.

Lastly, know your business. Invest in equipment that enhances current service offerings and the needs of the clientele that you service. Just because you think something is cool, does not mean it is a good fit for your business. Take your time with this month’s issue.
