STATEMENT: It is dangerous to wear eyeliner on your lower lid.
Facts: From “That causes eye infections!” to the more dramatic “You will go blind!” many people are on the fence about where to draw the line with eyeliner! It is a smoldering look that shows no signs of fading into the background, so I set out to find out the answer! First, let me define the waterline. It is the wet part above the lower lashes – or if you want to get technical, it is actually a mucous membrane. While it can definitely cause mild to severe eye irritation and potentially put you at risk for an eye infection, it is extremely uncommon. The Federal Drug Administration mandates that all chemicals or ingredients used in cosmetic products for the eyes must be tested, proven, and documented to be safe for the eye area. If you choose to line the watermark, sharpen the pencil before each use to get rid of any bacteria that could be lingering. The worst that can happen is the product could migrate into the eyelid wall, making the eye red and irritated. If that happens, remove the eye makeup thoroughly and use a saline eye wash to flush out the irritant.
The bottom line: It is safe to put eyeliner in the inner rims of the eyes. You run the risk of eye irritation and there is the possibility of red, watery or itchy eyes. But overall, it appears to be a safe practice. Stick to well-known brands and the common sense advice of not sharing eye makeup and you should be good to go!
