Pamela Taylor is one of New York City’s most sought after makeup artists and educators, who works in film, television and editorial print. A favorite with top fashion and celebrity photographers, Taylor has worked with many known photographers and directors in the industry. Known for her Hydration Technique, Taylor’s makeup applications have unique water painted quality. Her work is often featured in fashion and beauty editorials.
Since the age of 17, I have been in the cosmetics and beauty industry. I completed my cosmetology courses during high school. I worked in retail for a major cosmetics firm, then opened my own retail space in New York. I began working as an instructor, while freelancing with fashion photographers for photo sessions in New York. After developing an art form and technique of my own, I authored a book on makeup and opened a studio in New York City. Being an educator has had a great impact on my career. Many students that I have trained are now successful artists in the field. I have a love for sharing my knowledge and that is gratifying to me. But looking back now, I wish I would have taken advantage of creating a brand in the editorial makeup field. There were so many opportunities, but at the time my focus was on being an artist – which I still enjoy today! Over the years, I have pushed the boundaries of being a creative artist. I do this by creating new ideas in editorial beauty by using objects that inspired me. I have used fishing lures, candy, tools, gems and many other items that have inspired my creativity. For me, it is anything visual that works with beauty. But people have certain likes and dislikes. I truly believe there is someone for everyone! I feel that creating an environment that reflects the makeup artist’s personality and likes will attract people. My workspace is very artistic, yet clean and professional. I believe what separates the best shops from the rest is a professional environment with consistent artistry that keeps clients coming back. My clients know that if they are being touched by me, whether at my studio or on location, they are in a sanitary and professional environment. Also, I am known for a technique, which I created when I was starting as a makeup artist: The Hydration Technique. It imparts a very alive and breathable finish to the face. No matter what type of look I am creating, I do not like the look and feel of very heavy or thick foundation. My male celebrity clients love the application for stage, as it allows a natural look, yet works very well for photography and stage makeup. I just truly enjoy working and I love what I do. I am actually working on a new project and feel that being an artist comes naturally! I always keep myself busy and surrounded by the things and people I love!
Pamela Taylor’s response when asked if she thinks there is a particular moment or procedure where most makeup artists go wrong:
Many artists think that they should use the same step-by-step procedure for every face! If someone has great skin, I may opt not to use a foundation. Using a concealer, foundation, powder, blush, shadows, mascara, lip liner, and lipstick (or whatever else!) every time is not a necessity. I use certain products for certain results. I think this is something that is very important as an artist!
More from our interview with Pamela Taylor:
DERMASCOPE: What various roles and positions have you held within this industry?
Pamela Taylor: As I said before, I worked in retail for a major cosmetics firm, then opened my own retail space in the Resort area of Montauk, New York. I then began working as an instructor, while freelancing with fashion photographers for photo sessions in New York. After developing an art form and technique of my own, I authored a book on makeup and opened a studio in New York City. Also, I have spoken at tradeshows around the world and have worked as a consultant to several major cosmetic lines. My career and knowledge has allowed me to work in product development as well. I created a web-based color project for a major cosmetics line and have been a featured artist for several events related to the industry. I currently work with celebrity clients, and recently completed a working on a film with renowned photographer Kevin Mazur.
DERMASCOPE: Has there been a constant theme that has led you from one point to the next throughout your training and career? (As in asking questions, reading certain material, etc.)
Pamela Taylor: One of the most important things I have always done is to read and keep up with the most current fashion magazines (both in the United States and Paris, as well as other major fashion capitals). When I began my career, I always tried new ideas in makeup! I studied under Bob Kelly and Lee Baygan – two very creative artists in theatre. I loved fashion and when I was studying in the ‘80s, there was not a lot of editorial fashion makeup. I created new ideas in editorial beauty by using objects that inspired me.
DERMASCOPE: What has surprised you most during your professional journey?
Pamela Taylor: What has surprised me most during my professional journey is the expansion of the retail industry, along with the vast amount of cosmetic lines that are available on the market. Today, everyone has their name on a product! The industry has grown in leaps and bounds!
DERMASCOPE: What tool(s) would your room not be complete without and why?
Pamela Taylor: My favorite tools are great quality brushes and an amazing foundation! I use a custom blended base that is made for me. I could not work without it.
DERMASCOPE: What adaptations have you made over the years to stay relevant in the industry?
Pamela Taylor: I am constantly working in the industry, sharing ideas in the makeup world. I also am inspired by international ideas in fashion and artistry. I keep in contact with other artists worldwide.
DERMASCOPE: Is there a particular moment or procedure where most makeup artists go wrong?
Pamela Taylor: In addition to my previous answer, I believe using the proper hand dexterity while applying makeup is so important… The touch is so important!
DERMASCOPE: Do you or your company support any particular causes or charitable organizations? If so, who and why?
Pamela Taylor: Yes, I often donate my services to help cancer patients and others who are in need of cosmetic care. I have worked with burn patients and enjoy helping others. I also donate to charities via special events.
DERMASCOPE: What is the one piece of advice you give to every student you see?
Pamela Taylor: The most important advice is to keep practicing what they learned, always be inspired and to follow their dreams! Many have listened along the way.
