Skin care professionals can gain an understanding of cosmetic chemistry without being a chemist when they know why a product works without using the marketing language around it. It begins with learning about the makeup of any product.
THE FIVE BUCKETS OF INGREDIENTS
Each ingredient falls into five functional buckets of differentiation. The first bucket is the vehicle or base. These are the delivery mediums that carry everything else – usually ingredients such as water, oils, and solvents. They determine whether a product is a gel, oil, cream, or serum and alter the product’s texture, delivery, and feel.
The next bucket is what chemists refer to as structure builders. This is one of the most misunderstood areas of product formulation, yet it is also one of the most critical factors, as it determines whether a product separates, forms pills, spreads evenly, or degrades over time. These are emulsifiers, thickeners, and stabilizers that enable products to exist.
Active ingredients are the third category. These are ingredients that create a biological or visible effect on skin.
The fourth category is the support system, which protects the formula. They are ingredients that help preserve, chelate, or adjust pH to make products shelf-stable, prevent bacterial growth, and control oxidation and degradation.
Lastly, sensory modifiers determine how a product feels, spreads, absorbs, and smells; they include slip agents, silicones, powders, and fragrance components.
Think of a product formulation as a system: The vehicle carries it. The structure holds it. The actives perform. The support system protects it. The sensory modifiers ensure use. If one bucket is weak, the entire product suffers.
READ LIKE A CHEMIST, NOT A CONSUMER
Ingredient order is the primary clue for determining the concentration of ingredients until about 1%. Ingredients listed first have the highest percentage in a formulation, so when actives are listed at the bottom, they may be there for claim support rather than performance.
PH OVER PERCENTAGE
The pH of a product is critical. It determines the product’s activity, stability, tolerability, and penetration. Acids require a low pH to exfoliate effectively, whereas barrier repair products are often formulated at a skin-neutral pH to avoid disrupting the microbiome.
LEARN THE LINGO
A competent cosmetic chemist in training will ask questions such as: What stabilizes this active? What is the delivery system for this product? Is this formula doing too much?
While hero ingredients can help sell products, the real results come from a thoughtful formulation that considers all aspects. For instance, vitamin C requires protection from oxidation. When people say vitamin C, they are usually referring to L-ascorbic acid, which is one of the most unstable ingredients used in skin care. It is powerful but loses efficacy quickly upon oxidation and can contribute to irritation and discoloration. It requires pairing with secondary antioxidants for protection. These include ferulic acid, tocopherol, and ascorbyl palmitate.
MASTER THE CORE CATEGORIES
Professionals do not have to master thousands of ingredients to understand how skin care products work, but they should be familiar with the most important ones. These include humectants, emollients, occlusives, acids, antioxidants, preservatives, and emulsifiers.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
Professionals can practice cosmetic chemistry literacy by building a simple habit loop in which they study one product each week. Identify the base, then identify the actives. Figure out the support system and ask whether the claim matches the formula. Doing this will help build their confidence and intuition fast.
