The beauty industry has long been a space for self-expression and confidence, yet it has also historically excluded many individuals based on skin tone, hair type, body size, and even gender identity. While progress has been made, true inclusivity requires ongoing commitment, education, and action from brands, professionals, and educators alike.
Creating a beauty industry that truly serves everyone isn’t just about marketing or product expansion. It’s about reshaping how we approach beauty standards, customer experience, and professional education. From aestheticians to major brands, inclusivity must be woven into the foundation of our industry rather than treated as a trend or afterthought.
KNOWLEDGE GAPS
For decades, the beauty industry catered to a narrow demographic, often overlooking the needs of people of color, those with textured hair, individuals with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Many aestheticians, makeup artists, and hairstylists were trained primarily on fair skin, straight hair, and traditional gender presentations. This limited approach not only alienated clients but also created gaps in knowledge that left many beauty professionals underprepared.
One of the biggest challenges has been the lack of education on diverse skin tones and conditions. For instance, darker skin tones present hyperpigmentation differently, react uniquely to treatments like chemical peels, and have specific needs when it comes to sun protection. A one-size-fits-all approach in beauty training does not work and can lead to subpar results – or worse, harm to clients.
