When I step into a business, whether it be a spa, grocery store, or even a gas station there are a couple of things I pay attention to. Is the business clean and inviting? Does it carry the items I’m looking for? Are their prices reasonable? Then, last but definitely not least … customer service. Was I greeted when I entered? Are their employees helpful and friendly? Does the staff convey a professional appearance and attitude?

To some, this might sound like a long list of things to look for. But, in all honesty, we all subconsciously look for these characteristics. Personally, I do it because I want to feel confident in the business I’m trusting to provide me with a service. It is my belief that the number one goal for all businesses should be to make clients feel comfortable, happy and content. It should not be about how much profit was made. Sure we all want to make money doing what we love, but shouldn’t our ultimate goal be to build relationships? Relationships with our clients, employees, peers, and so on; not to see how many bodies we can get in and out in the shortest amount of time, for the greatest amount of profit. I recently came across a quote that I feel is relevant.

Kindness: one of the greatest gifts you can bestow upon another. If someone is in need, lend them a helping hand. Do not wait for a thank you. True kindness lies within the act of giving without expectations of something in return. ~Unknown Author~

We are in the business of helping people feel good about themselves, and what better way then to start by being kind. As nurturers we strive to help our clients reach their goals; we listen to their concerns, we comfort them when they cry, we provide guidance when they need help, and in effect we end up building strong, long-lasting relationships.

Here at DERMASCOPE we aim to provide the tools needed to help inspire and encourage you along your professional journey. Through articles and columns that cover a wide range of topics from psychology to business to technology; we are determined to provide the most current and relevant information available in the industry. It is our way of lending a helping hand, and establishing a long-lasting relationship with you, our reader, that is built on assurance and trust.

As always, your suggestions and comments are welcome. Please e-mail me at amckay@dermascope.com; I look forward to hearing from you!
