Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Water Pressure

Researchers at Dermapro, a skin research institute, and scientists from Korea have discovered that applying a 4% alpha hydroxy acid solution, combined with water jet pressure, rapidly improves effects on whiteheads and blackheads on the face. These results have led them to believe that combined physical therapy may have more impact on pore size.

These scientists set out with the hopes of discovering whether “an additional effect of physical treatment using chemical peeling combined with negative pressure, compared with alpha hydroxy treatment only, occurs in acne-prone subjects.”
In order to test this theory, a chemical peeling agent comprised of a 4% alpha hydroxy acid solution was applied to the faces of 23 women in good health. The women were then randomly divided into two groups, a test group and a control group. For the physical peeling, the test group was treated with chemical peeling combined with a water jet skin delivery system. The control group only received the chemical peeling. Furthermore, sebum output levels, comedone count, and pore area were measured before treatment and at various stages after treatment (one, two, and four weeks afterwards).
In comparison to numbers before the treatment, scientists found that both whiteheads and blackheads decreased at all stages after treatment. However, the test groups showed significant reductions, specifically after one week. For the test group, pore area also drastically decreased at one week and sebum output level was reduced at week four.
Clients who look for increased benefits during a chemical peel may find that physical effects, such as a water jet stream, provide the desired results. Not only will clients see improvement in pore area, they will also be pleasantly surprised with reduction in comedone count and sebum production.
