Aging has always been a hot topic in skin care, but the industry’s understanding of it is evolving. The factors behind skin aging are more complex than they appear, influenced by expected and unexpected factors.

We know that genetics affect aging, but it is often extrinsic factors like lifestyle choices, environmental stressors, and sun exposure that have the biggest impact on the appearance of skin. While embracing all stages of life is important, prioritizing skin health is just as necessary.

THE MECHANICS OF GETTING OLDER

While the visible signs of aging in skin may be bothersome, aging isn’t just about appearance; it’s also about skin’s health. Several mechanisms drive the aging process, leaving skin vulnerable over time.

Intrinsic Aging

Intrinsic, or chronological skin aging, can be thought of as pre-programmed.1 These changes are influenced by inherited genetics and the natural passage of time. Intrinsic aging is driven by internal factors like hormones, metabolic processes, immune system decline, and genetics.2 As people age, hormonal shifts lead to thinner, drier skin with less elasticity. Slower metabolic processes result in less energy for cellular repair and a buildup of damaged proteins and lipids, creating advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in skin.2 These advanced glycation end products affect the balance of skin, contributing to poor elasticity and wrinkles.

The immune system also weakens with age, leading to slower healing and increased inflammation, known as “inflammaging,” which breaks down collagen and elastin.2 Genetics can contribute to how quickly these changes appear, influencing everything from cellular repair to how skin responds to oxidative stress.
