That’s Not My Name: Microchanneling & Growth Factor Serums

Written by   Dorian Reyes

The aesthetician profession is one that is rapidly evolving. What has been commonly referred to as giving facials has now morphed into an aesthetic practice that goes well beyond face rubbing. As skin care professionals’ scope of expertise and practice progresses, it is only natural that trusted manufacturers rise to the occasion. One company that is has made it its mission to rise to the challenge is ProCell Therapies.

Coined as the next generation of microneedling, microchanneling comes from the brain of dermatologist Dr. Mitchell Schwartz, chief medical officer and founder of ProCell Therapies. After seeing space for improvement within the medical aesthetics sector, Schwartz utilized state-of-the-art stem cell technology and paired it with an improved microneedling device. This improvement differed so much from any previous devices on the market that the term “microneedling” is not an accurate description of what the ProCell device is capable of.

To begin, compared to traditional microneedling pens, this microchanneling device does not penetrate skin’s surface as deeply (0.25 to 0.5 millimeters) and provides a much less invasive treatment with an average downtime of 90 minutes. Since the penetration of the device’s needles stay within the dermis, there is no bleeding, and topical products have a higher likelihood to feed skin with the necessary nutrients. Additionally, because of the device’s stamp-like precision, the protocol does not call for a dragging action that may lead to skin tears and more damage than what is necessary. As a result, this treatment is more widely available to the majority of skin and Fitzpatrick types.

Although the act of microchanneling is innovative, the pairing of this practice with stem cell derived growth-factor serums is the secret sauce of what makes the treatment effective. The topical stem cell byproduct is applied immediately to the hundreds of thousands of microchannels created by the treatment, allowing for maximum absorption. This two-part system can help with acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, and even hair loss.

Naturally, when human growth-factor serums are brought into the conversation, there are many questions and misinformation that surround the topic. ProCell Therapies’ line of concentrated growth-factor serums with high levels of potency specific for skin is derived from the bone marrow of 18- to 24-year-old female athlete donors to obtain the stem cells needed to begin their process.

After the stem cells are collected and have received their allotted incubation time, the cells are then filtered from the broth they are stored in, leaving growth-factor proteins ready to biosignal cellular renewal. This filtration method is quite purposeful, as it disposes of all inflammatory factors that are present in the development of these growth-factor serums.

The world of microneedling and its subgroups are ever-growing, and it is, by far, an exciting time to be a skin care professional. In an industry where there are many devices and brands to work with and the development of solutions to client challenges are in constant motion, it is important to explore the many options to get the facts. Bigger is not always better, and better does not always correlate to more. Microchanneling is a niche in its own right, and who better to learn from than the company who put this treatment on the map.
