Performing Peels to Alleviate Dark, Rough Elbows and Knees

Written by

The elbows and knees are commonly-neglected areas of the body and can be challenging to keep smooth. Clients can have a peel conducted by a skin care professional to alleviate the dry, darkened skin on the elbows and knees.

The discoloration that occurs on these areas is due to the buildup of dead skin cells. Skin care professionals can perform chemical peels to remove this buildup. Peels that include agents like salicylic and kojic acid, vitamin A, and arbutin are especially effective. Once the dead cells are removed, the skin begins to replace them with new ones, creating softer skin. This process is called resurfacing. A skin-lightening agent is then added to blend out the dark areas.

Skin care professionals should instruct clients to practice proper homecare after getting a professional peel. Clients can treat the skin with cleansing gels, shea butter sugar scrubs, and lightening creams to retain results.

With proper professional and at-home treatment, clients will be free from dry, dark skin on the elbows and knees. These areas will be just as soft and luminous as the rest of their body!
