Moisturizing Myths

Written by   Sarah Dakar, educational director at UltraLuxe Skincare

All moisturizers are equal... False. Pay attention to texture. Lotions are the light option. They are best for warmer weather and normal to oily skin types. Creams are best during the winter months when skin tends to be parched and for very dry complexions.

Moisturizing-MythsYou do not need to moisturize your oily skin... False. Oily skin craves moisture like every other skin type and needs to be hydrated, too. The same reigns true for those with combination skin: a lack of moisturizer can actually result in excess oil production. You can use one moisturizer for your entire body... False. Using body lotions, oils and creams on your face that are formulated for your body can cause irritation and breakouts. Your facial skin is much more sensitive and thinner. Always reach for actual facial moisturizers and never use the same product for your entire body.

Best Moisturizers for Your Skin Type
Normal to combination skin calls for ultra-light, oil-free lotions that absorb into the skin and provide hydration and balance. Infusions with all-natural ingredients, such as ceramides, are great for replenishing skin’s moisture. Ultra-natural frankincense is key for fighting inflammation and vitamin E is a wonderful antioxidant for repelling free radicals.
Just like combination skin, oily and/or acne prone skin needs a feather-light lotion that provides enough moisture without overburdening the skin. Choose an oil-free formula that includes natural antiseptics and soothing ingredients, like lavender, for a complexion that is calm and protected from environmental damage.
Dry skin needs more than merely a light lotion. It demands a heavier option. Creams provide the ultimate in nourishment for extra dry and mature skin types alike which need formulas that can quench their thirst. Look for formulas that include shea butter, a powerful hydrator that richly moisturizes without causing irritation, heals dry skin, and works to eradicate flakiness from the inside out. Ceramides and essential itamins B5, C, E and K work in tandem to re-strengthen skin cells, making for a healthier, more normal skin consistency that does not feel parched or irritated.

Remember: your skin is the largest organ in your body and needs to be treated as such, from the inside out. What we feed our skin is just as important as what we put into our body.
