Pumped Up Skin Care: Using Pumpkin Year-Round

Written by   Louisa Alten, educator for Rhonda Allison Cosmeceuticals and cosmeceutical and technologies specialist

Most do not think of pumpkin as sexy. Inviting and comforting, maybe, but sexy? In one survey, pumpkin evoked such sentiment in men – they actually chose it as the most appealing scent even over vanilla or chocolate.
By definition, pumpkin is a fruit because it is part of an edible flowering plant with seeds. It is also considered a vegetable. Regardless, some things are classic and pumpkin is classic, not only for the holidays but also in skin care. Pumpkin is commonly used by aestheticians in masks, enzymes, products, and peels.
Pumpkin can work magic on women with hormonal breakouts and acne brought on by pregnancy. It is extremely healing and reparative and clears up blemishes. The experiential smell also creates an incredible environment for women who are pregnant and cannot do much for their skin. One cautionary note: always dilute pumpkin products with a lighter enzyme or mask during pregnancy. A little bit of pumpkin goes a long way.
In addition, this gourd of goodness goes far beyond olfactory pleasures. Considered to be a natural enzyme, it is wonderful for thickened skin conditions and can be used on all skin types. Emily, a licensed aesthetician of five years, said, “I would never like to look like a pumpkin, but I love the way pumpkin makes me look.” She explained that pumpkin was one of only a few ingredients that seemed to balance her oily skin.
Pumpkin contains zinc, which studies show to be effective as a topical healing agent for impure and congested skin. High levels of essential fatty acids found in the seeds are key to overall skin health and, you guessed it, pumpkin wins here, too.
Even Medical News Today recognized this orange wonder for its proven health benefits. All of that beta-carotene converts to a natural source of vitamin A and helps with cell renewal. Pumpkin is also rich in vitamins C and E, which support the skin’s natural healing process.
What is most surprising about pumpkin is that it is a great wellness tool and attractive for use in holistic treatments. However, pumpkin is actually very active and spicy. Enzyme or peel preparations made with this fruit resurface and polish the skin by exfoliating dead surface cells.
Pumpkin also naturally draws out impurities on the skin. Hilary, from Pure Skin by Hilary, said, “I never knew pumpkin was so powerful! I used it on client who had a filled pustule and I saw it extract before my eyes.”
There are multiple types of pumpkin enzymes and peels and pumpkin creates a fast track for clients who want to do deep peeling. It is one of the few deep exfoliating enzymes that help prepare skin before a peel because of its ability to break down cellular impaction. This paves the way for maximum peel absorption and to get full penetration from any acid peels.
So, with all the uses and multipurpose ways to benefit from this little miracle of a fruit, do not fall out of love with pumpkin after the holidays. Keep the romance alive because pumpkin is a tried and true treatment for every season.
