Expressive Eye Makeup Trends for Spring

Written by   Allyson Harold, lead makeup artist and color trend specialist at Mineralogie

Spring is approaching quickly and this year’s colors and techniques boast the most fun yet! Emerge from hibernation to become inspired by nature and all the colors it has to offer. Vivid color can be especially intimidating after a season of dark and vampy shades. This spring, take a fearless and original approach as a makeup artist by dipping into some extremely expressive shades.

When it comes to composing a makeup look for your clients, it is important to analyze the styles and trends of the season. This information will promote a well thought-out composition. This season, the colors are as shocking as they are soft – just as in nature. Techniques play an extensive part in creating modern looks. This step-by-step guide is a way to help clients ease into color.

All About the Eyes
Highly-pigmented eyeliner is a fantastic and lively way to introduce color to your client’s makeup. Spring’s vast color selection of animated amethysts and theatrical turquoise gives the imagination endless possibilities to customize.
Begin by creating a smooth and radiant complexion. All color will stand brilliantly against an even skin tone. Dab concealer under the client’s eyes, around their nose, and in areas of red using the warmth of your fingers so the creamy product melts into the client’s skin. The trend for skin is always healthy and illuminated. Afterwards, buff loose minerals or liquid foundation on top to create a flawless finish. Next, complete the skin portion by bringing the skin to life by using bronzers and lustrous highlights that give your client’s face structure and dimension. Minimal color should be used on the face to avoid pulling focus from the color on their eyes.Main1
With the foundation completely applied, it is time to enhance the eyes. Begin by laying down a neutral eye primer on the eyelid to allow powder shadows to glide over. Using a flat and condensed eye shadow brush, pack a light, shimmering gold onto the eyelid. This will pull the eyelid forward and bring just enough attention to accentuate the eye. Sweep a matte, mid-tone, skin-colored eye shadow through the crease to amplify the eye shape. Use a fluffy fiber brush with a taper that fits into the crease to experience blending during application. When executing a classic wing eyeliner, switch to a pointed synthetic brush to use with black liquid eyeliner. The trick is to evaluate the specific eye shape and cater the placement of the wing accordingly. Use the outside corner of the client’s eye as a guide and the perfect wing will materialize every time. Ensure that all lines are consistent and sleek in order to define the eye appropriately. Take a pitch black pencil eyeliner to rim the waterline and slightly smudge onto the eyelash line. This pencil can then be used as a base for the turquoise eyeliner underneath. Delicately blur the line using a small, flat brush that can reach into the eyelashes of the lower eyelash line. Once the black is softened, dip the small, flat brush into a metallic turquoise eye shadow and blend as close to the eyelashes as possible. Drag the turquoise eyeliner out slightly past the corner of the client’s eye so it mimics the shape of the wing eyeliner on top. Layer the eye shadow until the desired color payoff is achieved. Finish off the eyes by grooming the eyebrows to frame the eye and then add several coats of black mascara to the client’s eyelashes.
Complete the look by swiping on a pale, peachy neutral gloss on the lips. This shade was chosen for how its soft color compliments the vibrant color on the eyes without competition.
Use this step-by-step guide as inspiration and incorporate the client’s own preferences to create a modern and chic makeup application fresh for spring!
