I have been in the industry for 25 years – I started when I lived in Russia. Over the years, I have worked in a spa as an aesthetician and represented my company worldwide as an educator and speaker. Of all of these roles, owning my own company has been the most challenging because the work is on my mind 24/7, but it is a big enjoyment for me! The theme in my career has always been education and improving on my knowledge. I always try to research the latest in skin care ingredients, equipment, and packaging to bring to my customers – things that make aestheticians’ work easier and more pleasant. With the research I have conducted, I feel upcoming trends include a greater focus on the natural and pure products, with a departure from chemicals and toxic ingredients – which is my company’s philosophy. As for beneficial ingredients for the skin, I find hyaluronic acid to be a super ingredient! It is extremely hydrating to the skin, as well as non-comedogenic, light, fragrance-free, and silky. I constantly educate aestheticians on topics like these and find that they are genuinely interested and want to better their skills for their clients. It always surprises me how many people are sincerely eager to learn and seek advanced education. Education is of utmost importance in our field. Aestheticians can go wrong when they jump into carrying a skin care line or buying an expensive facial machine without doing due research first. Like we say in Russia: measure seven times, cut once. It is always a great idea to take classes at tradeshows to find out more about all the products in which you are interested. I even stress the importance of education to my skin care clients. I always advise clients to not forget to do their homework! Treatments with the aesthetician are not always enough – clients need to take product home and keep up their results, especially if they are struggling with certain conditions like acne or hyperpigmentation. Clients come to a particular spa because of the feeling of comfort and familiarity with aestheticians who make them feel relaxed and safe. Keep that in mind next time you are behind your chair. Be consistent and you will separate yourself from the rest.
