With all that has transpired over the last year insurance should be the last thing people should worry about. We all know the spa, wellness and beauty industries have been among the hardest hit. As restrictions lift there is sense of optimism as businesses open and get back to normal, whatever that looks like these days. Recently at PPIB we are noticing a number of companies are jumping in and out of the market. During this crucial time salon and spa owners as well as independent contractors shouldn’t have to deal with the stress of finding out their insurance carrier has gotten out of the game! Not us.

PPIB was created in 1993 with the sole purpose of designing insurance programs for industries that did not have them. First on the list was permanent cosmetics. PPIB worked closely with the Society for Permanent Cosmetic Professionals to develop underwriting standards, applications and endorsements that continue to serve this market.

In 2000, medical spas were starting to spring up everywhere. It was clear that a new program was needed. After consulting with doctors and device manufacturers, PPIB designed a program specifically for the medical spa industry. We understand the unique requirements along with the risks associated with the many procedures it provides. Our cutting-edge coverages include the newest trends like Plasma, Hyaluronic Pens, Cryotherapy and QWO / Cellulite Treatments.

Professional Skincare for Barbers

The barber industry is at a crossroads. Somewhere between innovation and tradition, the barber experience is changing. This spectrum ranges from having a cold beer with a haircut to plenty of men cutting their own hair due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With all of the restrictions placed on the service industry, people are desperate to sit down in the chair with their favorite barber just like old times. However, the barber industry could be changed forever; that is, if you are looking to revolutionize it entirely.

Personally, this past year has left me forgetting how good customer service can feel. For men, barbershops are the epitome of what good customer service can look like. Men typically do not have many one on one close interactions with other men where they can open up about their lives. But something changes when they sit down in the chair and the razors start buzzing. I don’t know… maybe it’s something they put in the Barbicide that makes men more willing to share personal information, but it is certainly true that most men look forward to chopping it up with their barber (pun intended).

With the service industry struggling in the past year, barbers are faced with a very unique opportunity. This is the opportunity to go above and beyond customer expectations when they get back in the chair. Going back to the fact that men are more willing to open up to their barber than some are to their wives, barbers are situated to be more than just a professional in the hair world, but as a holistic health guide as well. Why is this? Simply put, men lack education when it comes to their health.

Barbers as Educators
Need proof of this? Just picture a typical woman’s bathroom compared to a man’s. While yes there is an oversaturation of products for women, there is clearly a difference in the education. This gap is where barbers come in.

The bridge between education and customer service is a great opportunity to introduce men to other services outside of hair care. In particular, the most natural fit is to introduce men into proper skin hygiene. Since barbers are already beard experts, it only makes sense to continue up the rest of the face. This is a chance to introduce men to proper cleansers at the beginning of a treatment as well as offering basic mask treatments or beard facials. The best part about these services is that they naturally fit into what barbers are already doing.

Barber + Skincare Treatment
Start with a 30 second facial cleanse
Haircut
Beard (if applicable) and face facial
Trim beard
Moisturize beard and face and provide anti-aging solutions to the face

It’s that simple. And most men are going to feel like they are in paradise getting a full treatment like this. While men are still more hesitant to go to a spa and receive a facial treatment, a barber giving a basic facial feels entirely normal and men will absolutely love it. Men come to a barber to walk out feeling good about themselves. Introducing skincare into barbering services helps men leave with good looking hair and healthy skin from the one person they trust most. With the rising demand for men’s skincare in the beauty industry, barbers are best situated to capitalize on this as skin services can easily integrate into what the shop is already doing.

Men’s Mental Health and Search for Wellness

Last week I wrote a blog on the top men’s skincare trends to look out for in 2021. While the trends in that skincare blog were important, there is an even more important men’s trend on the horizon: mental health and wellness. I can guarantee that throughout this year, you will continue to hear brands promoting wellness. The purpose for this week’s blog is to outline what wellness means and how to prioritize it in our lives.

So what is mental health and wellness?
In order to understand what mental health and wellness is, I want to start with clarifying what wellness is not. A lot of the time when we hear the word wellness, we think of a yoga, zen-like state of mind that is only achievable with deep meditation. It’s not. Wellness is also not a repost on Instagram of a positive picture. Even further, wellness is not striving to get perfect, clean looking skin.

As people continue to broadcast their lives for the world to see them, there is a desire to promote only the best of their lives. While a lot of these posts do show off moments when we were “happy,” a lot of energy is spent in validating future happiness by what others may think of us when they see that post of a beautiful beach vacation. In fact, a lot of energy is spent in general of trying to validate our own happiness through others’ eyes. This goes deeper than social media.

When you think of a man’s stereotypical goals in life, it follows somewhere along the lines of a high paying job, a big house, and a family to live under it. Most men do not think to put “happiness” or “mental health” on their bucket list.

How to find wellness in our everyday lives
If I have learned one thing from 2020, it is that “happiness” is not an end result. Rather, happiness and wellness are opportunities to extract from life’s every moment. All we have to do is find the right tools to get us there. For the sake of this blog, let’s call these tools our “wellness sparks.” These sparks are those moments in life when everything just feels right. For me personally, it could be standing on the tee box with my closest friends or reading a good book in a small coffee shop.

The concept of mental health and wellness is to identify these sparks. I suggest you keep a running list on your phone of those small moments when everything in life seemed beautiful. The more we identify these moments, we not only appreciate them for what they are, but they also provide a way to retrace our steps when things are not so pretty. This year, I encourage you to chase your sparks and fill life’s moments with more of them.

The Unforeseen Troubles of Chlorine

Although summer brings a number of issues for clients like sunburns and neglected skin, one issue that may not be on that list is the aftermath that pool water has on skin. While chemicals found in pool water are near impossible to avoid, there are a few tips and tricks clients can follow to keep their skin from drying out. (Must be logged in and hold an active AIA membership to view video below.)

Free Radicals & Antioxidants

What are free radicals?
Free radicals are referred to as silent enemies that play an important role in the degeneration of our overall health and our skin.

There are two main sources of free radicals.
One source is a residual result created in the body during normal, essential metabolic functions. The other is introduced to us from our environment. Oxygen, although essential to life, is the source of potentially damaging free radicals. Stress also creates free radicals within the skin and contributes to the aging process.

Over time, free radicals break down our cells. And, as the body ages, it loses its ability to fight off the effects of free radicals. The end result? More free radicals, which leads to more damage to cells. This ultimately leads to the degenerative aging process.

So, how do I combat free radicals?
The answer is simple – antioxidants!

Our body produces several antioxidant enzymes that will neutralize many free radicals. Many vitamins and minerals act as antioxidants. Some examples include Vitamins A, C, & E, Niacin (B3), and carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, retinol, or bakuchiol – a naturally derived retinol alternative. Calcium, potassium, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, and magnesium can also help fight off free radicals.

What is the best way to protect yourself from free radicals?
It starts with what we eat. Eating foods rich in the vitamins and minerals mentioned above is the best way to consume antioxidants. Some foods that are packed with antioxidants include:

Carrots

Sweet potatoes

Squash & pumpkin

Leafy greens – spinach, kale, lettuce, and collard greens

Broccoli

Berries

Apples

Cantaloupe

Apricots

Plums

Red & black beans

Asparagus

Avocados

Pecans

What role does our skincare play?
Can skincare combat free radicals? Well, one would hope so. However, this gets a little tricky because skincare products can have antioxidant properties but additional ingredients that can negate the benefits.

Having a basic understanding of the ingredients in your skincare beyond the “key or active” ingredients is the first place to start in choosing products that are antioxidant-rich. Products that contain antioxidants help to prevent and lessen wrinkles, lessen inflammation, increase vascular activity within the skin, repair and heal skin, and so much more. Be on the lookout for Vitamin C, Niacin, Bakuchiol, Vitamin E, and Green Tea Extract, to name a few.

Although we cannot fully avoid free radicals, we can take measures to protect ourselves from them! Maintaining a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and topically protecting ourselves with antioxidants will help fight against free radicals that can have negative effects on our overall health and most certainly on the health of our skin.

What’s in My Makeup Bag This Summer

With summer right around the corner, most days will be spent basking under the sun. And with sunny days, comes sweating…a lot. Keeping your makeup fresh and in place is a recurring issue during the hot, humid days to come. We sweat, our pores get clogged, and makeup breaks apart, leaving us feeling like a sticky mess! However, investing in a few clean makeup products can upgrade your summer makeup bag to achieve a long-lasting, fresh, sun-kissed glow!

First, and foremost, it’s crucial to wear an oil-free, broad-spectrum SPF whenever you are outside. Research shows that 80% of premature aging is a result of sun damage. Not only will sunscreen protect you from any UV rays, but it’ll also act as a steady base for the rest of your makeup. Many SPF’s are lightweight and can give you a glowy finish or mattify your skin depending on your skin type and the look you are trying to achieve. Side note – it’s important to use an oil-free sunscreen so that it doesn’t clog your pores!

One product that is an absolute must for the summer is GINAMARIE’s Herbal Hydrating Mist! This mist is a cult favorite that can be used to set makeup in place or freshen up throughout the day. I love to carry the Mini Herbal Hydrating Mist (which you can purchase in the travel kit) in my purse for touch-ups throughout the day. Whenever I start to feel the heat a little too much or my makeup fading, I spritz the mist a few times and instantly my makeup pulls together for a radiant, refreshed feeling. The clean mix of aloe and an herbal blend of ingredients is the perfect recipe for calming the skin. It’s also loaded with antioxidants to prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

I’m also OBSESSED with GINAMARIE’S Cheek Contour! This is probably my favorite summer essential. It comes in two shades: Bronze and Pink. I prefer the Bronze because it adds the perfect amount of warmth for a sun-kissed glow. Both shades come in three colors to fit skin tones universally. I like to swirl around the product with a big, fluffy brush and apply it around the perimeter of my forehead, all over my cheeks, on my nose, and around my jawline. The warm, shimmering, browns make my skin look like I spent a week in the tropics! Again, these ingredients are all clean, so you won’t break out from any pore-clogging ingredients that might mix with sweat and bacteria! Healthy skin is happy skin!

Another summer go-to product is GINAMARIE’s Loose Translucent Powder. Powder is key in keeping your makeup from moving around and lasting all day. The powder comes in two different colors for lighter and darker complexions. Feeling fresh and clean is all about using products that are formulated with clean ingredients. I prefer this powder over other translucent powders because it’s so finely milled that it doesn’t feel like anything is on your face, which is important since the hot weather can make you feel like you’re wearing 100 lbs of makeup. It also contains a lot fewer ingredients than other powders, meaning it won’t cause any unwanted flare-ups! In the winter I usually bake with powder, but to keep that light, natural look, I swipe the powder over my t-zone!

Lastly, I believe a gloss is a summer staple. GINAMARIE’s Lip Gloss delivers the perfect amount of shimmer, giving that lit from within look. My favorite shade is Mimosa. It is natural, yet makes the lips sparkle to finish off the glowy, bronzed look we all are trying to achieve during the warmer months. The plant-derived ingredients make for a light texture that won’t leave your lips feeling sticky.

I promise these products won’t disappoint! Happy Summer!

How to Get Clear Skin This Summer

Most people have suffered with some form of acne at some point in their life. It is most commonly found on the face, chest, shoulders, and back, ranging from mild breakouts to cysts and scarring. Most acne is associated with teenagers due to hormonal changes. However, acne can occur at any age. There are many different causes for acne: the products we use, our diet, hereditary factors, environmental toxins, hormones, and makeup products all contribute to acne. If you are currently struggling with acne, we know how frustrating it can be to find a solution that lasts. Here are three simple ways to help heal your acne for good.

Diet
One of the most important factors that impacts the skin is what we eat and drink. It is imperative that we eat a balanced diet high in vitamins and nutrients to keep our skin looking its best. A diet high in processed foods, sodium, fat, caffeine, soy, and alcohol will cause the skin to not only age faster but produce too much oil. While we can still enjoy treats in moderation, the majority of what we eat should be clean.

It is also very important to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Water helps to fight bacteria and infection as well as remove toxins from our body. If you do choose to consume caffeine, you should drink even more water to counteract the dehydrating effects of caffeine. Sticking to a healthy routine will ensure that you are setting yourself up for success in taking control of your skin health.

Exercise
Not only does exercise reduce stress, but it increases vascular activity and circulation in the skin. Moderate exercise for 30 minutes 4-5 times a week is a simple yet effective way to improve the health of your skin. Just be sure to wash your face or shower after exercising, as the sweat and oils can get trapped in the skin, thus increasing the risk for acne and breakouts. The type of cleansers you choose are of utmost importance as your cleanser is the vehicle to remove all dirt and oil from your pores. Be sure your cleanser is water-based and pH balanced.

Makeup
One of the biggest mistakes when trying to heal acne is to cover it up with oil-based makeup. This is very common in individuals suffering from acne because we attempt to hide our blemishes with makeup. If you are going to wear makeup, it must be water-based. It makes no sense to take these steps to heal our blemishes if we are going to cover them up with oil-based makeup. Makeup that is not water-based will clog the pores while trapping oil and dirt, causing even more breakouts. Foundations, concealers, bronzers, blushes, powders, etc. should all be water-based. The rule of thumb is oil and water do not mix. All makeup should be able to mix well with water and be removed easily from the skin using water. No makeup remover is needed if your makeup is clean! How do you know if your makeup is water-based? Pour a glass of water, pour a small amount of your makeup into it, and stir gently. If you see lumps of makeup, there is too much oil in the product preventing it from mixing with the water. If the makeup blends in evenly with the water, it is water-based.
