A licensed aesthetician, Cara Dempsey is also the 2022 Face Reality Acne Expert of the Year and the owner of SKINCARA. 

What is your educational background, and how do you continue your education in the industry?

I dropped out of traditional college to pursue my passion for aesthetics. Learning does not stop once you get your license – it is just the beginning. I love listening to podcasts, taking advantage of continuing education courses, and finding good mentors to keep me motivated to grow in this industry.

How long have you been practicing, and why did you choose this field?

I have been a licensed aesthetician for just over five years. I originally wanted to do makeup but quickly realized that it was not for me. I am so happy I found my niche treating acne instead!

Acne alone is a challenging skin condition to treat and can have a significant impact on a person’s self-esteem. Unfortunately, after clearing acne, many are left with scars that reduce the chance of building lost confidence. Acne scars are caused by inflammation and damage to skin tissue. They can include dark spots, raised scars, or pitted scars. There are several treatments available for acne scars, including dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, punch grafts, chemical peels, dermal fillers, and microneedling. Microneedling seems to be the most favorable among many aesthetics providers due to the ease of treatment, quick healing, limited risk of side effects, and extraordinary results. 

SCAR TYPES

Pitted Scars

Pitted scars, or atrophic scarring, are most often caused by acne and can be the most difficult to treat. There are three types of atrophic acne scars that range from shallow to deep. Boxcar scars are known for their sharp edges and square-like appearance, rolling scars have a wave-like appearance, and icepick scars are narrow and deep. Atrophic scars are caused by severe inflammation that destroys collagen and breaks down the surrounding tissue. Inflammatory acne triggers an immune response in the body, causing an influx of inflammatory cells that break down collagen, and the body does not generate enough collagen during the healing process to fill in the depressions. 

Terri Wojak is a highly sought-after professional with over 20 years of experience in the aesthetic industry. Wojak is the education director of GlycoAla and runs her own education company, Aesthetics Exposed Education. She is a respected authority on skin care in a medical setting, education, and business development on multiple levels. Wojak has built 50 individual courses based on skin care in a medical setting. More than 100 of her articles have appeared in a multitude of industry magazines, and she has published two books, “Aesthetics Exposed: Mastering Skin Care in a Medical Setting & Beyond,” in 2014, and “Mastering Medical Esthetics,” in 2009. Most dermatologists and well-meaning aestheticians recommend the use of sunscreen everyday as one of the most important parts of daily skin care routines. I believe this to be a mistake.

The quest for glowing, healthy-looking skin is never-ending. Caviar lime is not the typical lime gracing margaritas or mojitos. Au contraire, also known as finger lime, this small, slender citrus fruit (microcitrus australasica) with green, red, purple, or black peel is found in the tropical rainforests of Australia. The textured skin encases an interior filled with translucent, caviar-shaped pearls in shades of white, yellow, pink, green, or red. Caviar lime is often used in food because of the citrusy flavor and unique look of the caviar lime beads. However, this ingredient is increasingly popular due to its skin care benefits as a natural exfoliant, acne-fighting powerhouse, glow-getting brightener, and antioxidant-rich elixir. The bottom line is that caviar lime extract is one of the keys to a fresh, radiant complexion. 

People, like the inanimate objects around them, are made of matter. Over time, this matter naturally breaks down and deteriorates, its structure and outward appearance slowly altered by the interplay of environmental elements. A shiny new bicycle, for example, will begin to show signs of rust as iron starts to oxidize on its surface and catalyze the aging process.

Iron is the most abundant transition metal in the human body and iron accumulation within the body is known to contribute to increased levels of oxidative stress, linked to a higher risk of chronic illnesses, like cancer and diabetes. Could the same element prove the culprit behind the way skin and other objects age? Fortunately, there are more than 125 years of research on the topic, but there is a vital missing piece to the modern understanding of aging.
