Spa Revolutions Faces Up to Skin Care Concerns with New Cowrie Lava Shell Facial

Spa Revolutions announces the expansion of their natural Lava Shell massage line to include facial enhancement services. Utilizing the newest, most versatile cowrie shell, with two specifically engineered mineral blends that deliver the dual efficacy of electricity-free warm and cold treatments, Spa Revolutions will take its facial treatments to a whole new level.
“The luxurious technique of shell massage combined with the spa’s go-to choice for serums, masks, and moisturizers, creates a tranquil and truly integrated sensory experience with immediate, visible results,” says Glenn Hogle, president and CMO.
In addition to facials, the unique shape, size, and thickness of the cowrie shell allow therapists to enhance any massage treatment. The shell design allows consistent heat during use when using the rocking movement and this technique is highly recommended with the trigger point blend for reflexology, spot therapy, and fusion body massage. To support therapists and ensure success, Spa Revolutions has developed a robust education program that provides certification of all lava and glacial shell blends.

Bellus Academy Launches CIDESCO Certificate in Skin Care

While he was no authority on skin care, a statement attributed to scientist Albert Einstein is prescient for the skin care community. “The problems we have today cannot be solved at the same level we were at when we created them.”
While the United States has had access to the CIDESCO diploma incorporating massage, skin care, and nails for many years, there was no single standards specifically focused on an aesthetician’s skin care knowledge and proficiency with various protocols and modalities. Yet, at the same time, new technologies, advanced protocols, and an improved understanding of the chemistry and science underlying skin care has amplified spa employers’ need for a higher level of skin care knowledge among aestheticians. As employers strive to find aestheticians with the skills and knowledge to provide advanced services, Einstein’s quote makes it clear – a new solution for demonstrating skin care proficiency is needed. That standard is CIDESO and Bellus Academy is honored to be the first United States school to offer the CIDESCO certificate in skin care.
Bellus Academy 2In spring 2018, spas throughout the United States applauded an announcement at America’s Beauty Show that the CIDESO skin care certificate and diplomas would be available in the United States. In an increasingly global world, CIDESO is recognized by leading spas and salons around the globe as the elite standard for skin care education. However, no standard focused exclusively on aesthetics existed. Undaunted, Lydia Sarfati, founder and CEO of Repechage, advocated for 12 years to bring the CIDESO skin care certificate to schools and spas in the United States.
Sarfati traveled from New York City to visit Bellus Academy’s Poway, California campus in January as the school launched the new curriculum. In addition to meeting with educators, Sarfati also met with Bellus Academy staff, students, alumni, and top spas in San Diego, to explain the CIDESCO skin care certificate and what it means to spas, aestheticians, and consumers around the globe. “U.S. salons and spas are pioneering exciting and inspiring new treatments,” said Sarfati. “The CIDESCO certificate in skin care complements advances in treatments with the most important ingredient to support long-term client growth and retention: knowledgeable skin care professionals.”
Summarizing the curriculum for the CIDESCO certificate in skin care, the curriculum includes advanced education on facials, facial electrical treatments, and full-day, night, and bridal makeup, with a minimum 730 hours required for completion. Bellus Academy is bundling the CIDESCO certificate into the advanced education program because it is viewed as a powerful differentiator for graduates entering the workforce and a portable, globally-recognized standard of excellence that allows students to pursue opportunities at the world’s most prestigious spas. Bellus educators are being trained as proctors to administer the exam.
As aspiring and licensed aestheticians, as well as spa employers, consider professional education, Einstein’s quote comes to mind again. New solutions are necessary to equip today’s spa employers to meet growing market demand. Employers’ demand for aesthetics professionals is projected to reach 200,000 in the next 10 years and the lines between beauty and wellness continue to blur. Bellus Academy is adapting technology to address these trends. For example, we have integrated eyelash extensions into the advanced aesthetic education program. And, from a wellness vantage point, in 2015 Bellus became the first school in America to offer wellness for cancer training. This program equips aesthetic students to provide facials to clients living with or recovering from cancer. Most recently, we have aligned with one of Bellus Academy’s top plastic facial surgeons to serve as a medical director.
Beyond innovations in technology and new modalities, this is an increasingly global world. The CIDESCO brand is represented across five continents providing certificate holders with portability and, ultimately, a recognized standard that speaks to their knowledge and skin care proficiency.

As 2019 heads underway, CIDESCO is excited to introduce new solutions that will address United States and international spa employers’ needs for a certificate focused on skin care excellence, as well as consumers’ demand for knowledgeable skin care professionals. The CIDESCO certificate in skin care is an important solution to solve this challenge.

Ten Thousand Waves Spa

Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains in New Mexico and a short drive from Santa Fe’s downtown is Ten Thousand Waves Japanese Spa and Resort. A luxury mountain spa that feels like a Japanese onsen, this coming year the spa will celebrate its 38th year.

“The Waves,” as the locals call it, is a unique phenomenon in the spa world. The emphasis at most Japanese spas is on providing a variety of indoor and outdoor bathing in beautiful surroundings. North American spas focus on massage and spa treatments – bathing is almost an afterthought. Ten Thousand Waves combines the best of both worlds through onsen bathing with a variety of massage, spa treatments, and facials.

The spa offers two facials – its Japanese Organic Massage Facial and its Oxygen facial. The Japanese Organic Massage Facial utilizes traditional Japanese massage techniques. During this deeply relaxing experience, a neck and shoulder massage releases tension as cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, massage, mask, and moisturizer tend to the skin. Japanese facial massage uses light stroking, kneading, and percussive techniques to increase circulation, muscle tone, hydration and lymphatic drainage for the neck and face.

The spa’s Oxygen facial infuses customized serums into the skin via pressurized oxygen. This works for all skin types and provides instant luminous results; it is also recommended for those who use injectables.

Licensed therapists will discover professional environments where their skills are honored, and their employment needs are met by the finest hospitality establishments in the industry.

Mother Earth Rx: Studies Show How Grounding Can Relieve Massage Therapist Pain and Energy Drain

A new study indicates that the earth’s healing energy may relieve common pain issues and energy drain that often lead to premature burnout among massage therapists.
The study was conducted with 16 massage therapists at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California and revealed a sharp difference in how the therapists felt and functioned when they were grounded for four weeks compared to not being grounded the first and last week of the study. When grounded, they reported significantly less pain, more energy, and improved physical function and mood.
Grounding, also known as earthing, refers to the discovery that connecting with the earth’s natural and subtle electric charge stabilizes the physiology at the deepest level, draining the body of inflammation, chronic pain, and stress. A person can ground themselves by spending time barefoot outdoors on natural conductive surfaces, like grass, soil, gravel, stone, or sand. It is as simple as that. Grounding indoors, in contact with grounding mats, body bands, or patches, while sitting or sleeping, is also productive. Such devices are either plugged into the grounding system of a house or building or connected to a ground rod planted into the soil outside.
During the study, the Chopra Center therapists utilized grounded mats at work (placed on the floor and under the massage table sheet) and grounded body bands or mats at home when sleeping.
Overall feedback suggests key benefits for massage therapists that may contribute not only to improved quality of life but also to keeping them in their professions longer. Because of the physical demands of their work, chronic pain problems and energy deficits are common among massage therapists. They are prone to tendonitis, painful fingers, hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, carpal tunnel syndrome, and a host of other occupational injuries. These problems produce inflammation-related pain and energy drain and, without relief, prompt many massage therapists to prematurely abandon their profession.

Biotin: The Beauty Vitamin

Biotin, also known as vitamin H or B-7, has numerous benefits for the body. From the nails to the nervous system, just small, daily amounts of this complex B vitamin will leave any one looking and feeling better.
A main function of biotin is to break down protein and fat in the body. Because the nails, hair, and skin are all made up of keratin, a fibrous protein, the health of all three can be boosted by biotin. The vitamin may also help with acne scarring. Although rare, a biotin deficiency can manifest through dry skin, brittle nails and hair, and hair loss.
Biotin helps the body convert food to fuel, promoting a healthy nervous system and liver. Biotin is said to regulate blood sugar, maintain healthy cholesterol levels, help thyroid and adrenal function, and aid in repairing and building muscles and tissues. It also plays an essential role in health during pregnancy.
Because it is water-soluble, the body cannot store backup reserves of biotin, making daily absorption of the vitamin important. Only a small amount is necessary in order to maintain a healthy biotin level, and this can be obtained through eating foods such as legumes, mushrooms, avocado, eggs, cauliflower, berries, fish, sweet potatoes, and spinach. Biotin can also be taken as a daily supplement. Studies indicate, however, that biotin is best absorbed through ingestion, rather than topically through the skin.

This or That Organic Versus Plant-Based

While the FDA does not regulate the use of the term “organic” on cosmetic or personal care products, the terms “100% Organic” and “Certified-Organic” are regulated by a number of different certification entities around the world, each with its own standards for certification. For example, in order for a product to qualify to feature a USDA organic seal on its package, at least 95 percent of the product’s contents must be organically produced.

The term “plant-based” is not regulated in its use on cosmetic and personal care products. It is generally used to mean that the product’s ingredients are derived from plant sources, like vegetables and fruits.

Tips for Getting Along Better With Others

Whether it is an overbearing coworker or a frustrating client, dealing with difficult people from time to time is a fact of life. Here are a couple of tips for getting along better with others.

Slow Down
There is great value in being contemplative and reflective. Take time to pause and think about people, situations, and events that cause stress or frustration. Often this simple step can prevent rash commentary, impulsive responses, and unnecessary conflict. When faced with a person or scenario that evokes irritation, stop, take a few slow, deep breaths, evaluate what it is about the situation that is upsetting, and then, if possible, talk it out. Others seldom intend to cause ill-feelings. Pausing to think is often all it takes to clear things up.

Be Positive
Positivity is powerful. People who exude flexibility, kindness, and optimism naturally come across as more attractive and approachable. Simple acts like giving and accepting compliments, being understanding, and smiling contribute greatly to a positive demeanor. Besides just gaining favor from others, being a positive person will also have a ripple effect, contributing to the overall environment. Start by working on just one element of being positive a little each day and it will quickly become second-nature.

Southeastern Esthetics Institute Hosts Their Centennial Graduation

Southeastern Esthetics Institute is honored to have graduated its 100th class on October 22, 2018. They hosted this special celebration at City Art in Columbia, South Carolina. In attendance were family, friends, fellow students, and instructors. Paula Wessinger, an instructor over the elite campus, shared her experience in teaching these individuals throughout their 20 weeks. “There were many tears and lots of hugs shared. It was a meaningful event for all,” said Wessinger.

All graduations are one of a kind and are catered toward each graduating class and student. Not one graduation is the same. Each individual is different and Southeastern Esthetics Institute understands that and speaks to each student who is moving out of the program and into the real world.

Student body president, Jocelyn Perez, said, “I look forward to growing in our careers, just as we started, together. The knowledge and friendship we have coveted in this program has made us comfortable in entering into the field of aesthetics and knowing we will be successful.”

Southeastern Esthetics Institute holds a graduating licensure course approximately every five weeks, each time placing highly trained aestheticians into the heavily growing industry. The 600-hour aesthetics licensure course is the only accredited aesthetics course in the state of South Carolina. The program teaches theory, practical, and real-life aesthetics experience to create the most well-rounded individuals possible. They are pressed to be the best they can be and to participate in community service, working independently and in groups.

“We are incredibly proud of these soon-to-be aestheticians and are excited to see them grow and make this industry better, bringing new ideas and excellent knowledge into the field,” said Courtney Sykes, owner of Southeastern Esthetics Institute. seestheticsinstitute.com

Press Release Atopic Acne

GlobalSkin Launches International Movement for Eczema Sufferers on First Ever Awareness Day

Today, the global eczema community unites to observe the first-ever Atopic Eczema Day to raise awareness and understanding of eczema and atopic dermatitis. Atopic Eczema Day brings together those affected by eczema or atopic dermatitis to share experiences and future aspirations and drive actions that improve lives all over the world.
To deliver that action, the International Alliance of Dermatology Patient Organizations (IADPO), also known as GlobalSkin, is unveiling AltogetherEczema, a new movement to elevate the urgent and unmet needs of the global eczema and atopic dermatitis community. Altogethereczema.org will serve as the central hub for people affected by eczema or atopic dermatitis, as well as patient leaders – providing resources, gathering insights, and seeking to empower collective advocacy.
“The inaugural World Atopic Eczema Day is a long-awaited chance to honor and empower those affected by eczema or atopic dermatitis and, finally, puts their needs in the spotlight,” said Christine Janus, CEO of GlobalSkin. “This community faces a huge range of challenges, whether physical or emotional, every single day. We hope by launching AltogetherEczema, we can kickstart a conversation within the community about what matters most. A clearer understanding of issues and priorities for those living with the condition will ensure that, together, we can work towards meaningful and relevant change.”
Globally, eczema affects up to 20 percent of children and 10 percent of adults. Atopic dermatitis is the most common – and chronic – form of eczema, which, typically, causes patches of dry, itchy skin that may worsen and can erupt into a rash when scratched. But, people also, often, experience a significant, negative impact on their emotional wellbeing – from an inability to sleep to associated feelings of social exclusion and depression or anxiety. It is this hidden, multidimensional burden that needs urgent attention.
AltogetherEczema urges the eczema and atopic dermatitis community to share their story and experiences of life with the condition, as well as their aspirations for the future.  By doing so, the key issues faced globally can be investigated, utilizing shared knowledge and insight to inspire advocacy and  a campaign for change.
