The workshop will address the risk of tissue infection which accompanies lymphedema, the lymphatic obstruction which is common when the lymphatic system is compromised as a result of chemotherapy. Participants will leave with a new understanding of which diagnostic, surgical procedures and cancer treatments place clients at risk for lymphedema. Attendees will also learn what questions to ask as part of the skin treatment consultation along with safe cleansing and massage modifications for clients at risk for lymphedema.
According to The American Cancer Society, more than one million people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year. Of these, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, just after skin cancer; about one in eight American women will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Other procedures which injure the lymphatic vessels, such as liposuction, diagnostic procedures and prophylactic mastectomy, may also result in permanent swelling known as lymphedema. Treatment of other cancers with lymph node involvement such as ovarian, prostate, head, neck and thyroid cancer also place clients at risk for lymphedema.
