What Puts the ‘Screen’ in Sunscreen

Acommon client misconception is that the need for a quality sun care regimen starts when the summer vacation is booked. However, professionals know that sunscreen is an ongoing necessity, requiring ingredients that combat harmful UVA and UVB rays – no matter the weather. Getting clients to understand that sun care is not seasonal may require a few conversations. After all, this is a myth that many people in the United States have fashioned their summer activities around. An effective way to promote year-round sun care is to explain what happens to skin due to prolonged UVA and UVB ray exposure – premature wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, burns, and cancer. There are many companies that have made it their missions to develop quality sunscreens. Here are a few ingredients that are integral to shielding the skin from sun damage.

TITANIUM DIOXIDE

Titanium dioxide is a reflective, chalky substance. When included in a sunscreen, it acts like a mirror, reflecting the rays attempting to penetrate the skin, rather than the titanium absorbing into the skin. Titanium dioxide is effective at blocking UVB rays and short UVA rays. Sunscreen formulas containing titanium dioxide often contain zinc oxide, as well.

GREEN COFFEE

The lipid fraction in green coffee beans is high in linoleic acid, which is known to absorb ultraviolet rays. Many skin moisturizers and sunscreens utilize various types of coffee for this reason. Green coffee bean oil also protects the skin from environmental factors and dehydration by sealing the moisture into the skin, strengthening the skin as a barrier against the elements and harmful rays.

STONE CROP

This succulent is known to survive in climates that are dry and typically not conducive to growing plants. Because of this, naturally, skin care companies have been experimenting with sunscreen ingredient combinations that include this plant. Stone crop’s antioxidant properties protect the skin from pollutants. When applied topically, it regenerates skin cells, lightens dark spots, and moisturizes dry skin.

SODIUM PCA

One of the main ways to combat skin damage is keeping the skin (and body) hydrated. So, many sunscreens contain humectants to draw moisture from the air into the skin. One common humectant used in sunscreens is sodium PCA. In addition to this, there are typically occlusive ingredients to seal in the moisture and others to act as a barrier against damage.

GINGER

This root has many health benefits. When used as an extract, one of the many benefits is its soothing and antioxidant power. When applied topically, this extract provides protection to the skin’s matrix from UVA and UVB rays. Ginger prompts the production of thioredoxin-1, which is an antioxidant protein and redox that wards off skin damage due to harmful ultraviolet rays.

ZINC OXIDE

One of the most common sunscreen ingredients, zinc oxide is highly effective in preventing skin damage from UVA and UVB rays. In fact, it is often used in sunscreens, cosmetics, and moisturizers because it minimizes the risk of skin cancer while absorbing the ultraviolet rays. Zinc oxide is created through a chemical heating process of zinc, which is combined with oxygen molecules. What is left after the process is a fine, white, crystalized powder that provides a protective layer for the skin.
