  • As a three time cancer survivor, I have experienced first-hand the needs of those facing this horrific disease and what it takes to feel whole as a woman going through treatments. As a patient, cancer treatments can present extra challenges when it comes to makeup and cosmetics. For example, typically oily skin can become temporarily dry and flaky and even the client’s skin tone can change, making them look ruddy, sallow, or tanned. A person may feel gaunt or pale, and, if they lose their hair, their confidence might drop. Because cancer treatments further weaken the immune system, special care needs to be taken when choosing and applying cosmetics. With a few extra steps, however, professionals can offset many of the beauty-related problems caused by chemotherapy. Moisturizing products help the skin to stay hydrated and cosmetics can give you a healthy glow, thus building one’s spirit. Learn the proper steps to providing beauty and skin care treatments to oncology patients.

Carolyn Diamond is the founder and director of The Philadelphia Academy of Makeup and Special Effects. As the daughter of an accomplished artist, Diamond learned early on to appreciate the beauty of fine art and music. Diamond was able to develop this appreciation as a young adult through photography, sketching, and watercolor. Her love of art has beautifully and naturally transitioned to the art of professional make-up application, which she has been practicing for more than 26 years. Diamond has been trained by internationally-renowned makeup artists and continually strives to expand her skills and knowledge through education, travel, and hands-on experience. Additionally, her training as a professional photographer allows her to specialize in the art of photography makeup. Diamond understands how to make her clients camera-ready, ultimately producing more flattering and natural-looking results.
