The Incredible Skin Benefits of … Turkey?

Written by Lira Clinical

Before you get booted from your family’s Thanksgiving dinner for rubbing a turkey leg all over your face, let us qualify that title a bit. Although the turkey is an incredible creature (being that it is a distant relative of the mighty tyrannosaurus rex and came shockingly close to being the national bird of the United States), the turkey itself is not necessarily a miracle cure for aging.

But, the title of this article was not meant to be misleading, since there is a particular chemical in turkey that does yield benefits for the skin’s health. It is the same chemical that has aunt Harriet nodding off in the middle of her vacation stories and uncle Lou snoring by the second half of the football game: tryptophan. Most people think of tryptophan as nature’s sleeping pill, but the truth is, it does so much more.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that stimulates the body’s natural production of vitamin B3 and serotonin – the combination of which provides an array of potential health benefits. When tryptophan acts as a catalyst in the production of vitamin B3, it assists in the synthesis of chemicals that are vital in releasing energy from cells and tissues, which aid the skin’s natural rebuilding processes.

Tryptophan also stimulates the production of serotonin in the brain, which eases anxiety and can help fight depression. This comes as a great benefit to skin health, since stress can be a huge factor in developing signs of aging. An increased level of serotonin from tryptophan-rich foods has also been proven to help fight migraines, as well as curb appetite to help weight loss.

So, after you finish your Thanksgiving feast with your family and start to feel your eyelids get a bit heavy as someone puts a second piece of pie on your plate, take solace in the fact that the same chemical inducing your nap is actively aiding in the complete health of your skin.

Understanding the Causes of Aging: How Do We Age? Research shows that there are three distinct types of aging: biological, extrinsic, and intrinsic. Biological aging is the result of changes that occur naturally within the body. These changes are the result of a gradual shift in the balance of certain hormones and messenger molecules excreted by other glands and organs within the body. Extrinsic aging consists of exposure to extreme weather conditions (cold, heat, wind) for long periods of time, smoking, pollutants, inappropriate cosmetics, as well as lack of…

Nature’s Caffeine: 6 Organic Alternatives for Energy Boosts Finding natural ways to boost one’s energy level is easy, yet commonly overlooked by most. Most people revert to coffee. I have seen the coffee drinker in the workforce crave coffee every single day, relying on it to provide an energy boost that lasts all day. I personally note that anything that seems like an addiction, most likely, is not healthy. What inspired me to write this blog was, for a few days, maybe weeks, I was having insomnia and…
  • Serenity by Salt
Serenity by Salt Kalahari opened here in the Poconos with much fanfare a few years ago. My husband used to be a delivery driver who often brought their heating and cooling equipment onto the grounds and would come home and tell me all about the massive indoor and outdoor waterpark with his eyes sparkling with child-like excitement and as big as saucers as he gave me detail by detail. He and the kids would often talk about how amazing the waterpark looked, but…
