Finishing Touch: Clean Makeup

Written by   Krysta Lewis

Clean makeup is just as important (if not more) as clean skin care because not only are you absorbing it but you’re also inhaling it. Powder-based conventional makeup can be formulated with talc, which can be contaminated with asbestos, and other heavy metals that can be harmful when inhaled. This is a fact many are not aware of.

For example, when wearing lip products, it can also get ingested throughout the day. Some say, you eat a few pounds of lipstick in your lifetime, which can be problematic if you’re avoiding gluten. All the right food choices can be made but your lip product may contains that very ingredient.

Lastly, many have skin problems because of the conventional makeup and skin care they are applying. For example, a young teenage girl starts breaking out because of her hormones. She applies a conventional foundation to cover it up, yet that foundation has hormone disrupters in it and clogs her pores, exasperating her breakouts. It becomes a vicious cycle, whereas if she had used clean makeup that problem may have been avoided.

Clean products can work better than traditional ones because they are formulated with plants and herbs that have a long history of being efficacious and helping skin versus harming it. For example, aloe vera can be used to help add hydration and calm inflammation in skin but also aids in providing a luminous finish. When formulated correctly, you can have the best of both worlds – high-performance and skin-serving products.

Not all clean makeup lines perform well, however. They should still be formulated intensively to achieve an outcome that is revelatory and new to clients. Be sure to do your research to make the best selections for you and your clients.
