Use an occlusive, water-resistant sunscreen. When spending time in the water, most products wash off easily, unless they are water-resistant. Using an occlusive sunscreen will shield the skin from ultraviolet rays and create a protective barrier for the skin.

Traditional skin care has typically consisted of topical products. Because products need to affect the dermis to have lasting results, companies and cosmetic chemists are constantly formulating products with ingredients that have molecular sizes small enough for absorption.

What tips do you have for creating effective retail displays in your spa?

The most important aspect of creating an effective retail display is to try to engage more than one of the clients' senses. While great and enticing visual displays will initially draw them to the retail area of the spa, incorporating another sense usually encourages them to buy. For example, when I have a particular product out on display, I always have a sample size available for testing.

An Introduction to Sun Care June 2016

In addition to a consistent homecare regimen and professional treatments, proper sun care is a vital factor in protecting the skin. At all times, even during winter months and on cloudy days, clients should be wearing broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB exposure.


While most clients are aware of the dangers of UVB exposure, such as sunburns and skin cancer, many are not aware that UVA rays have a deeper penetration into the skin than UVB rays and are responsible for skin aging.Taking protective measures, such as using an appropriate SPF and sunscreen product, applying sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside, reapplying often, and wearing protective clothing will significantly reduce the client's risk of sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer.
