Twice a week, I exfoliate with an enzyme at night, after cleansing. Three nights a week, I add a treatment product with tyrosinase inhibitors to brighten and even
my skin tone."

Lightly exfoliate the skin one to two days before waxing. A gentle, physical exfoliant will help the wax to adhere to the hair rather than the skin. It is best to exfoliate a couple days before the treatment – not the day of – in order to prevent unnecessary
sensitivity to pain.
Touch the freshly waxed area. After the skin is waxed, the follicles are typically open for about 24 to 48 hours, making the area more susceptible to infection. Touching newly waxed skin, as tempting as it may be, can transfer bacteria from the hand to the vulnerable follicles.

• Excess sugar molecules bind to protein, forming advanced glycation end products (AGEs).
• In young skin, collagen and elastin are organized, flexible, and resilient.
• In mature skin, AGEs bind to collagen and elastin, causing accelerated skin aging.
• The average adult consumes 20 teaspoons of added sugar per day. The American Heart Association recommends nine teaspoons of added sugar per day.
• Clients can stop the cycle of glycation by reversing the damage through the use of skin care products that contain sugar-inhibiting ingredients.
Exfoliation is the removal of the dead skin cells that reside on the outermost layer of the skin. This practice is often recommended because it reveals a fresh layer of skin that is softer, more radiant, and more accepting of product ingredients. Exfoliation can be achieved through physical, chemical, and mechanical methods. Because each of these approaches have different depths of exfoliation and levels of efficacy, not every method is ideal for every client.
For skin care professionals, protecting the skin from the sun is about much more than the pain and redness associated with a sunburn. The sun emits three types of ultraviolet radiation: UVA, UVB, and UVC.
"Being prepared almost always translates to success. I always have a list of questions and a copy of the candidate's resume in the room with me. I also like to thoroughly read their resume beforehand and try to tailor the questions I ask to their previous job or school experience. I always try to be as prepared as possible with my answers as well; it is important for me to have a salary in mind and know the particulars of their job duties. Being prepared with both my questions and my answers shows the candidate that my spa is professional and organized." Makenna Jones, owner of Awe Spa 200
Many skin care professionals love self-tanning products because they are a great alternative to outdoor tanning and tanning beds, which can cause premature aging and cancer. There are, however, a number of mistakes that clients can make when using a self-tanner. They may miss a spot, use a shade that is too dark, have streaks on rough areas, and even leave stains on their hands and nail beds. Clients do not need to worry or stop using the self-tanner due to a few mistakes, especially those that can be prevented and fixed!

While clients should be wearing sunscreen all year round, many of them do not take sun protection seriously until the start of summer, when outdoor activities prompt them to slather on products with SPF. Although clients may be tempted to grab the first sunscreen they see, they should put as much consideration into the type of sunscreen they buy as they do other skin care products.

From frustration and depression to confidence and joy, the range of emotions that are felt by clients in regard to their skin is wide-ranging and diverse. While skin care professionals know that there is a lot that contributes to having healthy and stunning skin (such as regular facials and a consistent, tailored homecare regimen), feeling beautiful in your skin is more of a reflection of the mind than the mirror. This month, remind clients of the true meaning of skin care: forming lifelong, self-care habits that will give rise to healthy skin. Although having clear skin might contribute to someone feeling attractive, truly being beautiful in your skin comes from a confidence that can only be found within.
Michelle D'Allaird-Brenner says, "We have long heard of the impact and power of positive thinking. The premise is that when you think positive thoughts, you behave in positive ways and positive energy comes back to you. The interesting thing is that the majority of people spend more time and energy debating this premise, arguing its validity and doubting its truth, than simply practicing it. Why is it human nature that we focus on the negative and the unlikely than the positive and the possible?"
Use an occlusive, water-resistant sunscreen. When spending time in the water, most products wash off easily, unless they are water-resistant. Using an occlusive sunscreen will shield the skin from ultraviolet rays and create a protective barrier for the skin.
Traditional skin care has typically consisted of topical products. Because products need to affect the dermis to have lasting results, companies and cosmetic chemists are constantly formulating products with ingredients that have molecular sizes small enough for absorption.
The most important aspect of creating an effective retail display is to try to engage more than one of the clients' senses. While great and enticing visual displays will initially draw them to the retail area of the spa, incorporating another sense usually encourages them to buy. For example, when I have a particular product out on display, I always have a sample size available for testing.

In addition to a consistent homecare regimen and professional treatments, proper sun care is a vital factor in protecting the skin. At all times, even during winter months and on cloudy days, clients should be wearing broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB exposure.
While most clients are aware of the dangers of UVB exposure, such as sunburns and skin cancer, many are not aware that UVA rays have a deeper penetration into the skin than UVB rays and are responsible for skin aging.Taking protective measures, such as using an appropriate SPF and sunscreen product, applying sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside, reapplying often, and wearing protective clothing will significantly reduce the client's risk of sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer.
