How Does Gratitude Show on Skin?

Did you know that counting blessings can show up on your face as a clearer, smoother, and more hydrated complexion? When you are healthy and happy, it shows on your skin. The idea behind this mindfulness is all in the psychology of how a person thinks. If your cup is full, friends and family can usually see it on your face, and it can rub off in a good way – a healthy, glowing complexion.

Gratitude is a powerful antidote for a negative mindset. Have you ever heard of the saying, “What you think about you bring about?” Mindfulness has been a buzzword for quite some time now and is a valid concept that has been proven to have a measurable effect on the function and vitality of skin. After all, skin is the largest organ of the body and truly a mirror of what is going on inside.

Skin Gratitude

Before a busy holiday-filled December, professionals may find an escape from their daily routine challenges by getting into the right state of mind through gratitude. This not only allows them to appreciate their skills and accomplishments, but they can also implement this energy and spirit to their treatment room and help clients achieve even better skin care results. (Must be logged in and hold an active AIA membership to view video below.)

Trick or Treat or Breakout: Halloween Makeup

Halloween-inspired looks are taking over social media. Clients are excited and ready to recreate what they see in a perfected, often filtered image. The worst thing for any skin professional to see is a client’s results go down the drain because they chose to use awful, pore-clogging Halloween makeup. There is a good chance they have not thought of a plan to protect their skin when piling on layers of synthetic stage makeup or silicone. This kind of makeup can result in scary breakouts, redness, and even a prickly rash. Using the wrong products, like lower-priced makeup, acrylic, or latex paint, can cause skin to freak out, leaving it irritated and dry. Unfortunately, when skin is irritated, it can take a while to clear up and get back to balance. To help clients find the best skin-friendly options, professionals always need to recommend professional-quality products that are user-friendly and perform well so clients can be at their spookiest.

Fiercely Fall

Fall is officially here, which means clients may be on the search for a new, bolder look – cue bold eyebrows. Fiercely Fall: Bringing Bold Brows to Clients

Long gone are the days of razor thin eyebrows. In summer, many clients wear less makeup due to the increased sweating from humidity. As fall approaches, clients start to consider an updated look, including the potential of an eyebrow update. During this season, most people have exchanged their light stone washed colors for a deeper hue. Dark wash jeans, boots, and rich fall colors in chunky sweaters take center stage in fall fashion, and even most clients add low lights in their hair or completely swap their bleach blonde hair for rich browns. Makeup trends also begin to move from light coral and pink hued lips to brown, nudes, deeper reds, and burnt orange.

Fall is a great time of year to think about how to get the best shape for any client’s eyebrows and how to enhance their color for a new season. Moving into the colder months can mean moving into bolder, darker eyebrows. By giving eyebrows a bolder update, it will match and balance out the darker and richer colors of the fall. Bold eyebrows are usually fuller, sharper, and are a central focus of the makeup look. This can easily be done by suggesting retail items like eyebrow tints, pomades, and pencils. Also, spas must offer eyebrow shaping services such as shaping consultation, waxing, or tweezing as they are an easy service to add on to any facial service. Posting before and after eyebrow shaping service photos and videos are a great attraction for online followers, especially on TikTok. This content will give anyone scrolling eyebrow envy.

The Unforeseen Troubles of Chlorine

Although summer brings a number of issues for clients like sunburns and neglected skin, one issue that may not be on that list is the aftermath that pool water has on skin. While chemicals found in pool water are near impossible to avoid, there are a few tips and tricks clients can follow to keep their skin from drying out. (Must be logged in and hold an active AIA membership to view video below.)

Pool Problems: The Unforeseen Troubles of Chlorine

During hot, humid summer months, nothing is as refreshing as a dip in the pool. Many start dreaming about the turquoise, glistening waters and the smell of chlorine as the earth around them unfreezes. Greenery takes over the brown and gray, and the days grow longer. Skin care professionals then begin to see the result of over-sunned skin – developed tan lines and damaged, dry skin. With a few key questions, professionals can usually get the jest of what environmental arsenal clients have put their skin through and quickly go into recovery mode, utilizing all the skin therapies to restore their barrier, soothe angry, red skin, and restore hydration to the deepest layer possible. Often, one important question is not being asked to clients especially during summer months and vacation time – have you been swimming in a chlorine pool for a prolonged period of time or sunbathing using the chlorine pool as your cool off zone? Most often, the client’s skin is not just showing signs of over exposure from the sun. Their skin is also showing the ravaging effects of chlorine.

Summer Bummer: Stress Breakouts

Summertime may be associated with fun in the sun, but for many clients, summer can be a time for busy schedules filled with humidity, sweat, and oily skin. Instead of leaving clients to their own devices, have the options ready to clear their complexions with Jaclyn Peresetsky’s column, “Skin Accessories.” (Must be logged in and hold an active AIA membership to view video below.)

Summer Bummer: Stress Breakouts

If a client’s skin has the tendency to breakout come summer, they are not alone. Many tend to break out in the summertime because the hot, humid weather means more sweating and oil accumulation on the skin, which clogs pores. Ultimately, this gives acne more of a chance to form, and when breakouts start to form, clients will react.

Clients may turn to quick drugstore solutions during the panic of a summer breakout and try to eradicate the breakout on their own. This often causes a bigger issue and increases the irritation instead of clearing the breakout. While skin care professionals can lecture acne-prone clients to keep their skin clean, toned, and moisturized with an oil-free moisturizer, adding a mineral SPF and wearing less makeup is not enough. Clients can easily overreact by over exfoliating or overusing charcoal and clay masks which dries out their skin. Acne clients prefer to have tools on-hand to treat their breakout, especially during the busy summer season of pool and beach days. It is wise for a skin care practice to have tools they can offer in their retail inventory for their clients to purchase before a busy summer season versus leaving them to their own devices. Let’s explore some tools that can be great accessory products for a spa.

The Dynamic Duo: Makeup and Sunscreen

Makeup with sunscreen seems like the ultimate win; however, the reality is that most do not use enough of theproduct to get the proper sun protection factor. Anytime sun protection factor is added to a makeup product, the sun protection factor is being diluted by either the formula or user application. Therefore, clients that think their foundation is doing a sufficient job in protecting their skin from ultraviolet exposure are mistakenly relying on this as their only sunscreen protection.

No Filler Needed: Finding the Balance Between Lip Filler & Natural Alternatives

Lips begin to noticeably thin starting as early as 30-years old.It is an unfortunate part of the aging process that lips lose their plump, full, and voluptuous volume. So, why does the dramatic transformation happen?

COLLAGEN CAVEAT

As we get older, the rate at which the body produces collagen, a vital protein that gives lips fullness and shape, begins to decline. Collagen production decreases at a rate of 1% to 2% per year starting in our 20s.In general, women produce less collagen than men, making the depletion even more noticeable. When you see clients, you probably notice the creases and lines that have formed on their lips, as well as evident lip thinning. The main reason that lip lines and creases start to form is due to lip volume decreasing from lack of collagen production.Collagen production is critical because it provides structure to the skin and creates the base for elastin and hyaluronic acid, both are vital to the structure, shape, and suppleness of lips. Therefore, consistent collagen is imperative for the lip zone.

GENETICS

There is also a bit of genetic predisposition to lip thinning, hormonal changes, or scarring from cold sores or lip biting that can affect the youth of the lips. However, lifestyle and self-care can also impact the appearance of lip lines and volume loss.Lip fillers have been a go-to solution for clients to gain the volume that they have lost; however, lip fillers do not always correct the loss of the vermillion border in its color appearance. The vermillion border gradually starts to disappear with the lip aging process and the beautiful clear lip-line, as well as the healthy, rosy-pink tone. Many clients will say they notice their lips are not as crisp (vermillion border loses its edge), and they feel the need to use a lip liner and reapply lip color religiously.

As a skincare professional, you always want to first address lip hydration and make sureclients are using proper lip or skincare products that stimulate collagen and restore hydration to their lips.Once lip health is addressed, then analyze their lip definition volume of the top and bottom lip.Inquire to find out if clients have considered or tried hyaluronic acid lip fillers for adding back in lip volume or correcting any asymmetry. Many clients are very hesitant to have any lip filler, due to the results they have seen in some of their friends, or they just are not comfortable with the idea.An alternative lip color procedure for them to consider is the lip blushing or permanent lip color technique done by permanent makeup artists. These procedures can offer a restoration to the lip line and natural lip color that has gradually disappeared in aging lips. Understandingeach procedure will help determine if you want to add one or both of these to your repertoire or refer a client out for a little lip restoration.

LIP BLUSHING

Lip blushing is the new alternative to the previous permanent makeup lip procedure offered by permanent makeup artists. It can be compared to lip gloss, tint, or lip blush. The idea of the procedure is to restore a natural lip color and keep the lip’s edge or vermillion border defined but soft. This will give the lips a fuller, softer appearance without a harsh lip liner look. With any permanent makeup procedure, clients should always have a consultation prior to the procedure to learn about the artist, see their previous work, and discuss the shape and color.

A topical numbing cream is first applied to ensure the client is comfortable.Once the lips are numb, the artist will draw in the lip shape that enhances the vermillion border and balances out the lip shape. An important focus during this process is to ensure that the corners never connect between the top and bottom lips as that can enhance the downturn of the lips which is a part of the natural aging process.

The permanent makeup procedures are typically done with a digital permanent makeup machine utilizing a specific single or multiple needle configuration inside a sterilize cartridge that implants pigment into the lower layers of the skin. The goal of lip blushing is to choose a pigment that restores or enhances the natural lip color that has been lost. Lips are prone to swelling with any lip procedure, so the client should be prepared for “Angelina Jolie lips” for a couple of days after the procedure. The lip color will also appear more vibrant and darker for the first few days.Around day three, the lips will softly flake, and the natural shade of the lip color implanted will start to appear. The lip blushing procedure does not replace lipstick, but it gives the lips a natural tint and softly redefines the lip line.

Clients that have previous hyperpigmentation, white spots, or scarring in their lips might need multiple applications of color and a slightly different color formula to successfully cover darker spots but can still get a beautiful result.

PERMANENT LIP COLOR

Permanent color is a similar process to lip blushing but the lip color deposited is a bit deeper and more solid to fully saturate the lips and create a more vibrant color or camouflage lip imperfections. Rarely is the lip a solid color, so artists typically do not use one solid color on the lip.Instead, artists take the time to add various tones, shading, and use application techniques that mimic the natural appearance while amplifying the lips’ volume and shape.Permanent makeup for the lip can add color back to a faded vermillion border, correct subtle asymmetries, and give the lip an enhanced or minimized fullness for a beautiful smile, giving your client a color enhanced and more youthful look to their lips.

This technique is great for enhancing the cupids bow to create a more youthful pout.Clients desire permanent lip color to eliminate smudging, smearing, or having to reapply lipstick throughout the day. After the healed result is complete, they can enhance the vibrancy of the color with a little gloss and go about their day worry-free.

Overall, restoring lip color, balance, and shape can be a game changer for a client’s self-confidence.Defining lips by adding even the slightest amount of color or lip blush can be the perfect touch to having a natural glowing look. These color treatments will not only give lips the look of volume, but also emphasize the natural shape of the lips with changes or corrections that were needed to restore balance and harmony.

Who said that you can only give lips volume with fillers? As quoted by the great and talented Audrey Hepburn, “Beauty is the being the best possible version of yourself, inside and out.”We all just need a little help sometimes.

Lash Love: A Quick Guide to Lifting, Tinting, Extensions, & Adhesives

Mask-wearing has really made more people focus on their eyes and explore other options to enhance their eyelashes other than with just mascara. Anaesthetician or makeup artist’s love of art and expression can be demonstrated through the eyelash services offeredto clients.

CUSTOMIZATION & ANALYSIS

Customization in service offerings is the way to build a strong eyelash business. Often, spas will try to compete in pricing wars instead of increasing the value for the services they offer. An example of this is to take the time to do a proper consultation and analyze the client’s eye traits and enquire about their lifestyle. This information is crucial to recommending the right eyelash service and determining the right technique. Some eyelash artists forget the importance of the analysis and consultation when they are in a maintenance eyelash service routine. If you want a long-term eyelash client, then considering all aspects of the client’s needs and desires to deliver the photo-worthy results, as well as meetingthe client’s expectations is crucial

Consider the following when servicing an eyelash client. The client’s eye shape – noting if it is almond, upturned, downturned, round, or protruding, theireye sizeandtheir eyelids. It is important to note if the client has mono-lids or hooded eyelids, as theybecause of the different considerations than other eyelid types. The orientation of the eyes is also something to consider. Are they deep-set, wide-set, or close-setConsider their eyecolor, qualities of natural eyelashes as in the length, volume, color, and curl (if any), and the client’spreferences (a natural look versus a glamorous or dramatic look) should always be noted. Client sensitivities to allergies ineyelash adhesive or eyelash activating solutions is something to consider and ask during a consultation. Finally, acknowledge the client’s lifestyle and their tolerance for upkeep.

After the analysis, it is time to choose the all-defining service that frames and enhances the client’s eyes and what they are willing to try out.Keep a client happy and meet them where they are – not where you want them to be.Be realistic on what you know they are willing to do when it comes to care and maintenance. As you build a relationship with them, always recommend alternative eyelash services for optimal results. Be conscientious and don’t set them up for failure if you know what they are asking for is not a good fit for your specific client.Taking all things into consideration is important in choosing the right eyelash service for the right person.

EYELASH TINTING

Eyelash tinting is a great option for a client who has lighter eyelashes and wants to add definition through eyelash darkening and waterproof color.Clients who love swimming, water aerobics, do hot yoga or live in humid climates tend to love a low maintenance eyelash tint.Colors that are most popular tend to be brown-black, black, or blue-black.Blondes and redheads are great candidates for eyelash tinting because their eyelashes are light.Mascara can look too artificial, so the eyelash tint adds natural enhancement to their eyelashes. Clients will typically maintain this service by visiting the spa every four to six weeks to refresh their tint.

EYELASH LIFT & TINT

An eyelash lift and  tint is the best option for chronic eyelash curling clients. Aneyelash lift will preserve the health of the eyelash, making them less brittle from the daily eyelash clamping. For clients over the age of 40, eyelashes start to “wilt,” and it may feel like mascara can weigh their eyelashes down.Doing aneyelash lift and tint on a client with wilted eyelashes, downward or sloped eyelashes, hooded eyelids, deep-set eyes, or crepey eyelids will really open up the client’s eyes and create a lifted eye appearance.A nice variety of eyelash shield sizes are available, so this service can cater to all different lengths and types of eyelashes. Most eyelash lifting kits provide eyelash conditioning-agents to maintain the health and the integrity of the eyelashes during and after the eyelash lift process. If clients follow the post-eyelash lift protocol for 24 hours, avoiding water and sleeping on their face, they will lock in the shape that lasts six to eight weeks.Only the new straighter eyelashes growing in will make them aware it is time for another eyelash lift.

EYELASH EXTENSIONS

Many clients desire a hearty eyelash girth and enhanced length for their existing eyelashes.Attaching individual eyelashes to the existing eyelashes meets the need for longer and thicker eyelashes and can last for four to eight weeks, requiring fills every two to three weeks to replace the eyelashes that fall out. There are a lot of decisions to make when considering what type of extensions will be a fit for that specific type of client.

There are a few types of extensions, including synthetic, silk, faux mink, and mink (from animals).Choosing the right extension for the client’s eyelash type is important, as well as determining the correct type of lengths, weight, and curl.I call this the “art of the eyelash fan.”The chosen type, length, and curl of the eyelash extensions should lift, define, and frame the eye.One of the latest eyelash trends is the volume eyelashes. With this type of extension, apply two to six ultra-lightweight eyelashes to each of the client’s natural eyelashes.Volume eyelashes are generally made of silk or mink and are a great way to create a more dense, full look for your client. As aneyelash artist, the client is depending on you to advise them what eyelash type and design they should have. Be prepared to have a good amount of eyelash extension types to customize the best look for the client and what meets her eyelash desires.

ADHESIVE OPTIONS

When choosing the eyelash adhesive, determine the client’s tolerance and the type of climate they live in.Specific adhesives dry and adhere differently. Also, some clients will prefer a glue that has fewer fumes, so it is important to have a sensitive adhesive available.Be sure to educate them that the tradeoff will be reduced the time of eyelash retention because the ingredients that may cause irritation are the ingredients that give glue stronger retention. The key to enjoying repeat clients is having the right adhesive combined with the right placement and technique. The combination will have clients loving their eyelashes, as they can go longer in between fills, and they are more encouraged to maintain them with good eyelash care.

Overall, eyelashes can be a wonderful option for a client for enhancing their eyes, especially in this era of wearing masks.Mask can create more moisture near the face due to breath and constant rubbing so offering eyelash services will meet the needs of a client, as well as perfectly complement any spa menu.

Modern Makeup Trends in 2021

Inclusivity – it’s something that that has received a fair amount of lip service until recent years, even in the beauty industry. However, the industry is one that can easily offer customization and personalization to everyone and thereby, prioritize inclusivity.

Take for example, products that most clients use daily – liquid foundation, tinted moisturizer, BB or CC cream. Because skin color has a vast range of shades, if you haven’t already, this is the time to create a more customized approach to makeup offerings and to introduce makeup that caters to a variety of skin tones.

PERSONALIZATION

Personalization has been a focus for many big conglomerate beauty brands for several years.  Emerging technologies have advanced how the customer can benefit from personalization. For example, it’s now possible to use an app that identifies a person’s best colors and skin care needs, in order to easily recommend or formulate custom products.  There are also big retail stores that have similar identification technologies to make it easier for customers to find products that solve their skin or makeup needs. Because many people are overwhelmed by the choices in large beauty stores, these technologies eliminate the guesswork for the beauty store employee and the overwhelmed customer.

STEPPING IT UP

In addition to these technologies that are available to the public, the professional beauty industry needs to step up with an approach that leverages makeup knowledge and the client’s desire for customization.  Beauty professionals bring years of experience and advanced education that can’t be found elsewhere or from technology alone. In fact, the relationships with clients is the best way to learn about what is important to them as a person and what would be best for their skin in skin care and cosmetics.

A rising cosmetic trend for 2021 will be the demand for offering products that can match anyone’s skin tone versus having products with a lack of skin tone diversity. Recently, I came across an app that is designed for the customer to take a series of photos of their face and tapping their phone on different parts of their body to get an a accurate read of the skin tone and voila! The custom foundation formula is shipped within 24 hours with their name on it.  So, the future of makeup has arrived.  In entering 2021, how does a beauty industry professional keep retail sale in spas strong and stay current with trend that we know are here to stay?

THE CLIENT’S CHALLENGE

The answer starts by thinking through the client’s challenge.  Any client looking for the right foundation to match their skin tone can be overwhelmed at the thought of going to the drugstore or a large cosmetic store and staring at the endless brands, shades, and formulas on the shelves.  Often, they feel intimidated and will just guess what shade looks right or what shade they would like to be and not even consider the formula type. This intimidation or frustration can lead to quick, rash decisions. Even the most extensive shade ranges can accidently leave a skin tone out or force consumers to buy a couple of different shades to mix their perfect color on their own.  Clients need an easy solution. They simply want the best formula to look and feel their best.

To do this in a spa, create an designated area to create a foundation formula with personalizing factors like shade, finish, and skin additives.  It simply takes researching the right brand that offers training and support, so a spa can be ready to offer this new, customized solution to clients. Your eye for color and education on skin care will help create the perfect personalized color and formulation for every client, including every single shade imaginable.

As personalization continues to be a trend in the new year, adding custom foundation as an offering for clients is a smart business move.
