Are You Covered?

There is an abundance of information that is consistently said about sun protection. Much of this surrounds the notion that it is an essentialthat needs to be worn year-round and reapplied when outdoors. This is a simple concept that many are well aware of; however, it is one thing to know what should be done for sun protection. It is quite another to put it into practice.

There are two things to consider when covering sunscreen. First, there are those who do not heed advice given on this topic. Secondly, today’s SPFs have far more benefits than just sun protection.

The first point may seem self-explanatory, but it is of the utmost importance. Daily use of an SPF is essential every day – all year-round. Skin care professionals believethe strength should be no less than an SPF of 35.The reason as to why SPF should be consistently worn is because even in cloudy skies or cold weather, ultraviolet rays prevail. This is a difficult concept to grasp for most because sunscreen and summer have gone hand-in-hand for as long as sun protection products have been widely available.

Todays SPF formulations are far more than they were 30, even 15 years ago. Modern formulations are packed with antioxidant ingredients such as vitamin AC, and even E. These essential antioxidants provide powerful protection from free radical scavengers in the environment, such as auto and industrial pollution, air quality pollutants, particulate matter 2.5 (fine particles with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller that can penetrate the skin), and stress-induced free radicals.

In addition, new technology sunscreenshave the ability to protect from the influences of inside lightingas well as blue light produced from the screens of electronic devices.

Clients and skin care professionals alike are inundated on a daily basis by free radical scavengers that break down the healthy cells of skin. SPF is the best defense from harmful rays and, therefore, continual use is a must.
