Is mineral oil bad for your skin?

I have heard and read SO many things about mineral oil in skin care. Is it really bad for the skin? What’s fact and what’s fiction?

Hi Hayley,

Thank you so much for this question, as it's a very common question and one that I had frequently pondered myself as an esthetician! Unfortunately, a clear answer is not available, as there are conflicting views on mineral oil in regards to its safety for the skin as well as its impact on the environment. While many sources view mineral oil as "safe" for the skin and tout its hydrating, protective properties, what comes into conflict is its potential content of carcinogens, as well as its limited biodegradability, or its ability to breakdown without impacting the environment. It is highly likely that any skincare manufacturer is using mineral oil due to it's ease of availability and low cost vs. botanical sources that provide these skin benefits. However, due to these conflicts, a safe bet would be to incorporate other natural, non-conflicted ingredients that boost skins barrier function, such as olive and sesame seed oil, as well as botanical hyaluronic acid, rather than mineral oil.

I hope this information is helpful, and wish you the best!
