An Introduction to Sun Damage

Written by   Jamina Metcalf, L.E., national educator for Skin Fitness Therapy

Picture a warm, sunny day on the beach. Feel the heat of the sun touch your skin and warm your body and soul. A nice breeze whisks away the hot heat, leaving you feeling perfectly warm. Fast forward 10 to 20 years and your skin is showing major signs of aging.

Sun damage is no fun and no joke. Most skin care professionals tell their clients that they need to wear sunscreen and protect their skin, but, oftentimes, their warnings go unheeded. Although most clients might think that the sun only causes pigmentation and brown spots, it also causes wrinkles, premature aging, thinning of the skin, and cancer.

Luckily, the skin can be rejuvenated with great products and skin care techniques!

FOUR TIPS FOR REJUVENATING SUN-DAMAGED SKIN

Shed away brown spots and pigmentation. This action can be accomplished through exfoliation techniques such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser.

Inhibit melanin from being produced. Cells have memory capabilities; when the skin is overexposed to the sun's damaging rays, the brain tells skin cells to produce melanin to protect the skin. The skin needs to be fed products that contain powerful tyrosinase inhibitors, which can slow down melanin production.

Restore the skin's health. Now that the pigmentation has been shed and the melanin is being controlled, it is time to heal the skin from the damage the sun has caused by caring for it with nutrient-rich products.

Protect the skin. The use of sunscreen cannot be stressed enough. It should be simultaneous throughout all the preceding tips. If sunscreen is not used religiously, the prior three actions are futile.

The skin should be one of the most prized organs because it is literally the face of a person's health. Taking care of it is vital; it is the only one a person gets!
