Are Hypoallergenic Products Better for Sensitive Skin?

Written by   Bojana Matovski, founder and president of Rejuvee™

While clients with sensitive skin are often told by their doctors to use hypoallergenic products, there is no industry standard for products that are labeled as hypoallergenic. For example, companies can remove the fragrance from their product and call it hypoallergenic.

Furthermore, a huge percentage of hypoallergenic products on the market today are made with exactly the same ingredients as non-hypoallergenic products. Generally, companies remove the fragrance and artificial colors, but parabens, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, and other ingredients that have been shown by researchers to be irritating and allergenic are not being removed.

HYPOALLERGENIC MEANING
When a product is labeled hypoallergenic, it means that it is significantly less likely to cause allergic reactions. In order to make sure the skin is safe; do not just look for products that are labeled hypoallergenic. Instead, skin care professionals and clients should look for products that do not contain certain ingredients.

Hypoallergenic skin care usually means that the presence of most allergens has been eliminated. Therefore, clients with sensitive skin can feel comfortable knowing that there will be less flare-ups and irritations. It is often misunderstood and assumed that hypoallergenic products are only for people with sensitive skin or allergies. However, hypoallergenic products are great for a variety of uses; they can be beneficial for clients with dermatitis, rosacea, or psoriasis.

WHY HYPOALLERGENIC PRODUCTS ARE MORE DESIRABLE
Hypoallergenic products do not contain allergens, which often irritate the skin's pores. When hypoallergenic products are used, the skin will be less likely to have infections or acne. Skin care products with allergens can also cause dark spots and blotches, while hypoallergenic products minimize this risk.

Because the skin changes over time, a client that does not have sensitive skin at the moment could develop sensitivities and other skin problems. Some clients with sensitive skin are just dismissing it as dry skin. Using hypoallergenic products will make sure that they are not putting themselves at risk for more sensitivities or conditions. Hypoallergenic products also help with a number of skin care problems and are great for anyone wanting firm, clear, and healthy skin.

Skin care that is safe for allergies provides benefits for every skin. If a client has sensitive skin, compromised health, or other conditions, then using hypoallergenic products can provide a higher level of confidence.

Because companies are overusing the term 'hypoallergenic' and giving it a watered down meaning, it is still essential for clients and professionals to read the ingredients of all the products they intent to use.
