The Real Deal About Stretch Marks Featured

Written by Joyce Park, M.D.
The Real Deal About Stretch Marks

I’ve developed a new interest in stretch marks (striae) lately, not because I’m having a baby, but several of my close friends are pregnant, I will eventually be pregnant in the next few years, and as doctors we want to be informed about how to prevent and treat stretch marks. We are all in our late 20’s and early 30’s, and the thought that our bodies are going to undergo huge changes is frightening! Being in dermatology I naturally wanted to look at the evidence behind prevention and treatment of stretch marks, and I figured many of you would be interested too. Here is what I found.

Understanding the Causes of Aging: How Do We Age?

Research shows that there are three distinct types of aging: biological, extrinsic, and intrinsic. Biological aging is the result of changes that occur naturally within the body. These changes are the result of a gradual shift in the balance of certain hormones and messenger molecules excreted by other glands and organs within the body. Extrinsic aging consists of exposure to extreme weather conditions (cold, heat, wind) for long periods of time, smoking, pollutants, inappropriate cosmetics, as well as lack of skin care and protection. Genetics and heredity are considered intrinsic aging and dictate the rate at which the body’s aging process progresses.

Your Worst Enemy… Chronic Inflammation

Written by A Natural Difference
Your Worst Enemy… Chronic Inflammation

A growing consensus within the scientific community is that common disorders are all caused in part by chronic inflammation or even re-occurring inflammatory lifestyles. Inflammation is the body’s natural defense against foreign invaders or infection. Most of the time inflammation is a lifesaver that enables our body to defend itself against various diseases, caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Are Ultraviolet Glass Bottles Worth the Price?

If you’re an avid skincare maker or consumer of small batch, artisan skincare products, I’m guessing that you’ve heard of ultraviolet glass bottles. This is a special type of glass that many natural formulators use to maintain the integrity of their products. Though it’s really violet in color, it appears black, and it’s become the preferred packaging for many of my students and colleagues.

Ready for me to say something shocking about how Miron violet glass actually doesn’t work how you think it does? I’m not going to–well not totally. I actually use the glass myself for many of my products because I believe it is the best quality packaging out there for helping to keep products fresh and pure. I don’t use it for everything, because it can be pricey–but for my clients who reuse their bottles and for my own household personally, I do think it’s worth the investment.

Target Wrinkles With The New Eminence Organics Marine Flower Peptide Collection

When targeting wrinkles and the appearance of aging, peptide technology is a collagen-boosting solution. What are peptides? According to Vogue magazine, they are “the building blocks of protein” that encourage the formation of protein in skin, like collagen. When peptides do their job of activating the production of collagen, skin looks younger and stronger with visibly fewer fine lines and wrinkles.

Got Energy? Feeding Your Inner Rainbow

We think of energy as being physical – the boundless energy of children, nervous energy, and so on – but energy is actually fuel; your physical self depends on the energy from your subtle energy body. Your vitality, or lack thereof, comes from feeding yourself energetically – what I call feeding your inner rainbow. Here's how it works:

The Difference Between Dry Acne and Oily Acne

Acne is one of the most common and difficult skin conditions that we treat as aestheticians. When you break out, those annoying blemishes are a combination of dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria. Those with oily skin have excess oil on the surface, making it the perfect breeding ground for breakouts. Yet, surprisingly, even people with dry skin can get acne. So, what is the difference between oily acne and dry acne and what is causing that to happen?

Skin Hydration

Written by Institut' DerMed
Skin Hydration

Strengthening your skin's ability to retain moisture is the key to youthful looking skin. Understanding your skin's natural moisture level is understanding that it can fluctuate depending on your skin type and the kind of environmental exposures your skin is exposed to. The lipid layer of your skin is designed to keep moisture in and keep irritants out. When it comes to your skin, how hydrated or dehydrated your skin is and looks depends on holding on to that moisture as much as possible.

To Treat Dry Skin, Start by Understanding TEWL

Transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, is an essential concept to understand when considering skin dryness. Although often overlooked, TEWL is one of the main reasons why moisturizing the skin regularly and with the right products is a crucial step in keeping skin healthy and hydrated.

Are Your Wrinkles Actually The Effects Of Pollution?

Written by Eminence Organic Skin Care

Every day, we come in contact with microscopic specks of soot, chemicals and even acid in the air. With growing awareness about the effects of air pollution, we realize that they not only harm Planet Earth, but also take a visible toll on our complexions. We now know that airborne particles directly stress the skin, causing wrinkles and premature aging.

3 Ways Exercise Ages Skin

3 Ways Exercise Ages Skin

You may not want to hear it and I hate to say it, but it's true... exercise can seriously age skin. Some of our most active patients, especially men, are the ones who request the most help for skin correction and repair. The key to combatting aging caused by exercise is to understand how different components of a workout affect your skin and what to do to prevent damage! This is what I've noticed and learned over the years...

Decollete Skin Care

Decollete Skin Care

Do you take care of your Decollete? Do you know what it is? Decollete is a French term given to the upper chest, neck, cleavage and shoulder areas. It is one of the first places on a woman to show age and so should be cared for in a similar way as we care for our faces. If you spend much time outside, this area is often exposed to sun too but we tend to not pay so much attention to putting sunscreen here. The Decollete is prone to hyperpigmentation and degradation of collagen that occurs due to exposure to UV light.

4 Sneaky Causes of Wrinkles (& How to Avoid Them)

4 Sneaky Causes of Wrinkles (& How to Avoid Them)

It happens to all of us, but as we age, we all want to do so gracefully. Even if you take excellent care of your skin, there are still sneaky little culprits that can speed the aging process, causing an increase in fine lines and wrinkles. To help you age as beautifully as possible, we're revealing 4 common causes for wrinkles (a.k.a the "4 Sneaky "S's") and what you can do to avoid them.

What Causes Dark Spots?

To have a complexion as flawless as a Disney princess may seem like a fairytale or something only achievable with the help of Pixar or Photoshop.  Unfortunately, factors come into play that can cause us to have uneven skin tones in the form of dark spots or hyperpigmentation. So, what exactly causes us to have imperfect complexions, and most importantly, what can we do about it? Find out below.

Exfoliation - Chemical vs. Physical

Exfoliation is essential for healthy cell turnover and a clear complexion! There are 2 types of exfoliators on the market - physical and chemical. I have put together a little bit of information which will help you decide what method will suit you best!

The Reinvigorating Essence of Coconut Oil

It could certainly be argued that the coconut is the most versatile fruit on the planet, not only for material purposes, like using its husk as a piña colada container or to help Tom Hanks hammer a shelter together in Castaway, but also the extremely healthy and naturally beneficial ingredients of which it is comprised. The ingredients in coconuts can be utilized in numerous forms but, when it comes to beauty the most effective use is coconut oil. Coconut oil has many uses, including being used as a cooking oil, although, due to how rich in essential vitamins and nutrients coconut oil is, it has an amazing effect on the look and feel of your skin.

The Original Art of Eyebrow Sculpting

Written by Tasha D. Manigo-Bizzell
The Original Art of Eyebrow Sculpting

I have been sculpting eyebrows and teaching the technique for nearly 20 years. In that time I have seen all kinds of self-expression from well-meaning make-up artists trying to be edgy and utterly confused “do-it-yourselfers” who clearly fell face first into the looking glass. It pains me to see both women and men who sport poorly manicured brows so I decided to revisit the art of the sculpted brow and teach you how it’s done.

I went to MAC the other day to purchase my favorite BB Cream with the SPF of 50.  I kept looking at the testers that the store had on display and could only find SPF 35 in my Medium Dark BB Cream.  This young, Bettie Paige, MAC representative approached me, wearing her hair in a sultry pinup design and flashy red lips, asking if I needed her help.  I told her I needed the BB Cream that had the 50 SPF, she dropped her head down and let out an apologetic sigh as she told me that MAC no longer sales anything over a SPF of 35 because of the new FDA (Federal Drug Administration) regulations.

One of the most difficult way of improving skin condition is avoiding stress. Difficult because it is nearly impossible for people to avoid feeling stressed. Students for example have so many writing projects to do. They also have to study overnight to make sure that they will pass their exams.

It's the season to celebrate moms! In honor of Mother's Day, we're looking for a mother/daughter duo to win a day of pampering at SPA ONE at The Plastic Surgery Group. Submit a photo and a brief description of the photo. Please be aware that the image will be used publically on Facebook for the contest.

Don’t you think that by now we would all understand that when we make a post on Facebook the entire world has the ability to see it? How many of us (I am mostly referring to women) even have ways of seeing people’s profiles who we are not friends with because someone we know will do a little snooping on our behalf? There are no secrets on Facebook – not even if you block someone.

I was watching ENews, one of my favorite entertainment shows, in fact the only one I watch, and they had a segment where the fabulous Giuliana Rancic (she always has me laughing with her witty remarks and comebacks) was hosting along with Jason Kennedy (he has a gentleman’s demeanor and child’s curiosity) where they had a special expert guest on set talking about skincare.  Of course, curiosity got the best of me and I started watching even more intently.

The winter blues play melancholy sounds to our skin, repeating the same sounds over and over, singing “the sun’s not shining… the sun’s not shining” in a slow deliverance.  Our skin responds with a hollow whisper, “I need sunshine…I need light”.  We may be in spring but the winter still wants to linger around as much as it possibly can.  The winter months are full of gloomy skies, short days and long nights.  We don’t receive the adequate amount of daylight that needs to feed our brain with that “feel good” sensation.  Some people begin to suffer from the winter blues, also known as, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) a form of depression.

Can you guess the number of articles on retail I found on the top three professional skin care websites?

I am amazed at this number. Not for the fact that it is so large, but for the fact that spas or salons with a successful retail strategy is so few. Let me be blunt and ask, WHAT THE #### ARE YOU ALL THINKING?!

Rick Butts wrote a book in 2002 titled The Big Butts of Life. Of course, he meant 'buts'; however, I believe his point was that we need to get off our rears and stop making excuses for tackling our life’s goals. That and it was a play on his unfortunate last name.

Use Certified organic skin care products only from a trusted skin care store like "Mum To Be" to get the natural beauty and healthy skin.

Fear often prompts us to seek out information, and the media sometimes exploits this by latching onto scary stories and sensationalizing them to boost their ratings. Readers and viewers can then have a difficult time finding the kernel of truth that inspired a story. When it comes to medical news, this can have a detrimental effect on patients’ ability to evaluate health risks and to choose safe and effective medical care. This has been the case with news about BOTOX® Cosmetic lately, and it’s time to set the record straight.

What is collagen?

Everyone seems to be speaking about it or maybe the lack of; we decided to give you the inside track on what collagen is how it affects your skin.

Collagen (pron.: /ˈkɒləɨn/) is a group of naturally occurring proteins found in animals, especially in the flesh and connective tissues of vertebrates.[1] It is the main component of connective tissue, and is the most abundant protein in mammals,[2] making up about 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. Collagen, in the form of elongated fibrils, is mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendon, ligament and skin, and is also abundant in cornea, cartilage, bone, blood vessels, the gut, and intervertebral disc. The fibroblast is the most common cell which creates collagen.

In muscle tissue, it serves as a major component of the endomysium. Collagen constitutes one to two percent of muscle tissue, and accounts for 6% of the weight of strong, tendinous muscles.[3]Gelatin, which is used in food and industry, is collagen that has been irreversibly hydrolyzed.

Got it? Do you understand?

Let’s make it clear!

Collagen is a protein that supports most tissues and gives cells structure from the outside. It’s extremely strong! It is what keeps our skin strong, firm, full of elasticity and helps with renewal of skin cells.

Young people have smooth, firm skin, as we age, collagen production slows and the skin cells weaken, and the aging wrinkles begin to show.

WISHPro Phototherapy

What can you do?

There are  supplements in liquid or pill form; however, there is a discussion on whether supplements are effective. Also, there are known side effects from oral collagen supplements. They could be dangerous if you have any food sensitivities.  Collagen creams are available; however, it is not absorbed into the skin easily if at all with a topical cream.

Synoia Technologies wants to make it official:

Applied to Guinness World records requesting to attempt to set a record for the fastest anti-aging treatment in the world

Synoia’s revolutionary patented WISHPro, initially launched a year ago after 4 years of research and development provides a variety of treatments including anti aging, skin rejuvenation and more.

The WISHPro device incorporates the Magnetic Infusion Technology  (MIT) that creates a magnetic field .This magnetic field  is partially converted to  Microcurrent, Red LED, Blue LED,  or Magnetic Pulse  technologies using the different technology heads,

and together with the serum-infused treatment capsules, MIT penetrates the active serums into the skin .

Magnetic Infusion Technology

The Magnetic Infusion Technology is based on the physical fact that identical repel:  A positively charged ion in the magnetic field forcibly pushes a positively charged ion from a serum into the skin.  MIT creates a rotating magnetic field so that there is a constant barrage of charged ions reacting with the serums. The rotation of this field ensures that as ions “bounce” off of the serum or the skin, they are constantly sent back until full penetration into the skin.

The unique combination of the MIT  technology with the personal serum-infused treatment capsules delivers unparalleled results – The WISHPro delivers significant visible results for anti-aging or rejuvenation treatments in just15 minutes. Fine lines and wrinkles are reduced instantly.

Recently we participated in an interesting conversation about mobile spas. Everything is going mobile so why not spas?

However, there is a lot to consider before opening up your own mobile spa or salon.

State and City Regulations For Mobile Spas

Many states prohibit cosmetologists, estheticians and nail technicians from performing services outside of a licensed place of business. So check the rules with your local laws for mobile spa services and check the spa licensing boards for more information before you invest!

What services are you going to offer?

It really doesn’t matter where your business is, on a main street, in an RV parked in suburbia, or in your clients home/office, you must decide which services you are going to offer. Who is your target market and what services do they need is the question you should be asking yourself.
If you are an esthetician, you will want to include all of your skin care protocols, including a deep cleanse, anti aging treatments, Microdermabrasion, peeling, and various technologically advanced treatments.
You also might want to add more services such as waxing, manicure and pedicures so that you can offer your client a one-stop shop.

An article was recently published in US Weekly about how Courteney Cox is scared of aging and is doing everything she can to combat what nature is throwing her way and on her fear of turning 50.

Courteney Cox says she grew up in a home that looks and aesthetics were on top of the list of family values. Her parents look good and take care of themselves. Courtney is going one-step further than eating well and exercising she is trying out new treatments to scare the aging monster away.

Now I ask you, do you have to become addicted to invasive and expensive treatments to take care of yourself, your skin and to look beautiful? The answer is no.

Over the last decade, major advancements have been made in laser treatments. In the early years  continuous wave carbon dioxide laser was used to resurface skin, while results are positive many patients suffered from redness and swelling. Innovation has brought about a new generation in lasers, however the price is still high and it is still considered an invasive treatment.

Hey you deserve it!

Today there is so much conversation about the rise in narcissism in today’s society, it is even being referred to as the narcissism epidemic. The internet, mainly social networks, infatuation with celebrity media, easy money, and the shakeup of values and morals in the household could be to blame.

Whoa there, this is not what I want to talk about, I want to talk about the positive results that come from you, yes you , when you think about yourself.

You know that old saying you can’t love someone unless you love yourself? It might not be 100% true but even if it is 80% right we really have to start loving ourselves more. How can you do that? Take care of yourself.

Make 2013 About You

Eat better.

Try to eat more super foods, less foods that contain trans-fat, more raw vegetables and fruit, drink more water, use less salt.

Sleep better.

Get to bed on time so that you can have those 7-8 hours of good healthy sleep. Clean up your bedroom, you will sleep better in an uncluttered room. Buy new pillows. Try not to eat a heavy meal late in the evening. Drink a cup of soothing herbal tea before you go to sleep. Relax!

With so many skin care regiments available, it is difficult to know which one you should do, which treatment you should do often and which you should do maybe seasonally or yearly. First, your aesthetician should be able to write out your “prescription” for the next 6-12 months to make sure that you have beautiful young fresh looking skin. Part of your regiment should be peeling to rejuvenate your skin.

What Is Peeling?

It is just like peeling a vegetable to take off the skin, on your face it removes a layer of dead skin.  Once the layer is removed, any dirt that has built up is gone and your skin will feel rejuvenated as collagen production is

What Types Of Peelings Are There?

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is a fairly invasive procedure and should only be done by a professional.  Depending on the type of skin and what needs to be treated (acne, discoloration, wrinkles) a combination of chemicals is brushed on the skin. Some of the chemicals used in this peel are glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid. The skin then reacts to the chemicals, blisters, dries and flakes off. Usually your skin will be red for a few days, and it might itch or burn.

As the temperatures drop outside, and the heating goes on in-side, your skin goes into Winter Mode and your daily skincare regimen should change with the season.

Collagen and Elastin are the two major proteins that are responsible for making your skin healthy looking when everything is balanced. However, as we get older and in the colder months, these two proteins slow down in production and you feel it on your skin.

Synoia has recently added a new treatment capsule to the WISHPro line of treatments. The Hyaluronic Infusion is made from Hyaluronic Acid, Witch Hazel, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera Extract, Dead Sea Minerals, and Castor Oil. The combination of these ingredients will especially help you through the winter months.  The Hyaluronic Infusion helps stimulate collagen and elastin production, reduces Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and it will keep your skin moisturized from the under layers of your skin. This is a great treatment for winter months, (but not only!)

History is full of descriptions of beautiful women. Poetic descriptions of their body shape over the course of time have changed from being a mirror image of the ancient Egyptian and Greek gods to the plump well-rounded “fertile” look of the middle ages, cinched waists, flat chests and bell shaped bottoms, to the tight corsets with bustles and overflowing cleavage, to the mannish look of the 1920’s and the athletic healthy body of the 21st century. The only feature that has not gone through a descriptive change is the woman’s skin.  Throughout history, women have been described by their clear, fresh, glowing and soft as silk skin regardless of their geographical placement or skin color.

How Did They Achieve Beautiful Skin?

Ancient text is full of original pharmacological prescriptions for cosmetics and skin care. The use of oils, balms, honey, salt and Shea butter has been documented since the times of the Egyptians.

Originating in West Africa, Shea butter is extracted from the nut of the karate tree. It quickly became popular and was imported with other spices and oils throughout the Middle East.  Regular usage of Shea butter protected the skin against the climate, prevented wrinkles and soothed irritated and dry skin.

One of the ongoing topics in our blog will be all about customer service and care.  When it comes down to it, there is nothing, but nothing more important than customer service.  Let’s face it, there are great aestheticians, spas and salons out there who know their stuff. They know how to deal with anybody and everybody’s needs. Therefore, if your client is not happy about the way you treated them – they will be out your door and in through somebody else’s. They’re not coming back.  We want to help you, make sure that your customers stay with you. Actually, we want to help you turn your customers into your very own brand advocates.

What Is A Brand Advocate?

According to Webopedia, “a brand advocate is a person, or customer who talks favorably about a brand or product, and then passes on positive word-of-mouth (WOM) messages about the brand to other people.”

  • First, you must offer a solution to your customers. Every business must answer their customers pain or problems, if they don’t or can’t you don’t have a customer.
  • Superb customer service and care

My dental hygiene regiment is very strict, yours should be too. I brush 2-3 times a day, floss, I don’t exaggerate on sweets, I have my teeth cleaned regularly and have a checkup at least once a year. There is a direct correlation between healthy teeth and a longer life span. Do you take care of your skin in the same way? Do you make sure that your skin is healthy and that it looks young even though you are getting older?

Our blog posts will be covering “Anti Aging – A Lifestyle” in depth; from nutrition to exercise, from skin care to “state of mind”. Following simple guidelines will help you remain young inside and out.

And because as a child, I was cute and sweet and the daughter of the publisher, everyone spent a little extra time with me. They loved the idea of me growing up and following family traditions. The truth is, I loved the idea too. I have really been blessed with having access to such industry leaders. Now as an adult, I am beginning to understand the impact all this exposure has had on my life.
