Joining a Trade Association

Written by

Are you interested in furthering your career but are not sure where to begin? Joining a trade association is a great place to start; there are associations for every profession or area of interest. Kelly Cherwin says, “An association is a synergistic group, meaning that the effect of a collection of people is greater than just one person.” We have a bigger voice and platform when we join forces with like-minded individuals.

Networking is, by far, one of the most important things you can do to build your professionalism, resources, and career. For most, developing professional relationships is imperative to the success they seek; joining a group allows you to have a sense of security and trust as well as access to more resources. Associations typically sponsor numerous events throughout each year. These events provide the opportunity to connect face-to-face with others who are traveling down a similar path. While there, you can ask for advice, share your experiences, and get recommendations from those who have been where you are going. Another perk of growing your network is that you may find a mentor who can help you with a current challenge. You may even find yourself mentoring the next generation of professionals. The world needs more people who are willing to give of themselves and their experiences.
Most associations have vast informational resources, such as articles, videos, books, and case studies. By joining an association that focuses on your profession, you are more likely to keep up-to-date on trending services, ingredient knowledge, changes to the laws that govern your profession, and continuing education requirements. Membership privileges often include access to discounts, newsletters, trade magazines, communities, and blogs.

For such a small investment, you gain access to vast resources.

Another reason people often deliberate joining a professional association is to develop their career and business resources. Some associations even have job boards that are available exclusively to their members. This is a great way to find jobs or opportunities that are specific to your training, education, and passion. Established associations may have experts (or pioneers of your profession) who are ready and willing to help guide you down the winding road of success.
Join a trade association that understands the journey that you are embarking on. For such a small investment, you gain access to vast resources. Capitalize on the resources and be an advocate for your profession.
