Addressing Client Challenges

I hope everyone is having a successful and fulfilling first quarter. I have been spending a good amount of time consulting with clients about ways to prevent and correct damage from hyperpigmentation. With such a wide variety of products and services that our industry offers, it can be an overwhelming journey for the consumer. If you are anything like me, you have tried an array of products and treatments to see for yourself which actually work.

Hyperpigmentation is a personal challenge for me. I have melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that developed from a laser burn I received over 12 years ago. Regardless of where or how our journeys started, we are all looking for visible changes that will not break the bank. Before you tackle treatment, make sure your clients are committed to protecting themselves from more damage – melanin loves the sun. Sunscreen and hats are a simple and accessible way to prepare for sun protection. Teach your clients to layer sunscreen throughout the day. SPF mineral powders can be found in easy-access, purse-sized applicators to assist with the need to consistently reapply every few hours.

Vitamin C is trending again this year, providing both the encouragement of collagen production and, just as importantly, cell protection. Vitamin C is also helpful to assist with lightening skin pigment. Staying vigilant with a skin care routine will yield the best result, so be direct with your clients about their commitment to results. Remind them not to get distracted by the beautiful sunshine and the smell of summer – stay strong with their prevention and protection routine!

Another challenge that I find clients run in to is not giving sufficient time for products to make a difference. I teach clients to give all products at least 90 days to monitor the effects of the product, then reevaluate the visible benefits to their skin. We have to remember that those fine lines and sun damage did not appear overnight, which means that they will not go away overnight either. Before and after pictures really help with this process. Document their progress and re-consult with each client on a regular schedule to evaluate results and goals.

Remember, as a skin care professional, you represent your work. As you become exposed this summer, your skin will need some extra care as well! See that you are doing everything you can to preserve healthy skin. And for heaven's sake... treat yourself to a massage.
